Embárquese en un viaje perspicaz y emocionante que rebobina Portugal en el siglo XX, un siglo en el que el país se convirtió en una de las primeras repúblicas de Europa, luego fue gobernado por el dictador despiadado Salazar y solo en 1974 recuperó la libertad y la democracia. Damos la palabra al barrio de Belém y sus monumentos, esculturas y lugares únicos que han jugado y siguen jugando un papel crucial en los destinos del país. Belém (Belén) era el nombre que recibía el fondeadero del que partían los barcos de los Descubrimientos Marítimos Portugués. Sin embargo, hace cien años, esta era una zona industrial sombría. El punto de inflexión llegó con la Exposición Mundial Portuguesa de 1940, una celebración nacionalista no documentada habitualmente en las guías turísticas. Este paseo explora Belém tomando el polémico evento como piedra angular de su transformación en lo que es hoy. Nos acercaremos a las principales atracciones desde un ángulo diferente y también nos centraremos en lugares generalmente fuera de los caminos trillados.

La fachada y los espacios interiores de la catedral gótica tardía más lujosa de Lisboa con explicaciones perspicaces sobre su significado histórico y místico.
Esta plaza fue el centro y es el principal patrimonio de la Exposición Mundial portuguesa. Hacemos paradas rápidas junto a los macizos de flores heráldicos, la fuente monumental y los caballitos de mar.
Caminamos y tratamos de arrojar luz sobre el icono principal de la exposición de 1940, sin olvidar la majestuosa rosa de los vientos que cubre el pavimento a sus pies.
El Museo de los Populares es un enigma y una verdadera rareza de la Lisboa modernista.

Lobby bartender José Salazar was the sweetest during my stay
Pasteis tasting (pastry), Belem defensive tower, visit to the botanical garden (medium), we could not see the Jeronimos monastery (too many people)
Wonderful experience with Luis! He gave us a detailed overview of the waterfront architecture and what is left of the structures from Salazar’s 1940 exhibition. Also lots of info on Portuguese history and culture. Who are the people carved on the exploration monument? Why are there no markers explaining this? Take this tour and find out! Excellent tour with a true expert.

This was a great tour to get an overview of Portuguese history as well as of the Salazar period and their efforts to promote a specific Portuguese identity. Luis gave a lot of background as we toured the waterfront area and landmarks and how this area reflects the Portuguese 1940 exhibition and its propaganda aims. He was very adaptable to the weather and our many questions! He also provided follow up info related to art we saw. Luis found the best spot for coffee and pastel de nata too…great experience with a true expert.

In short, Luis was exceptional! You can sense the passion through his knowledge on Portugal’s history. He was also considerate enough to ask what we’re most interested in. The more he senses one’s curiosity, the more passionate he becomes when educating you. His background of being a journalist, educator and philosopher made this experience a 10 out of 10! Very good guide in French. There were only 2 of us so we had a private visit. The guide is familiar with the history of the neighbourhood and Portugal.
