Rushed Sights of Dubai

Seeing the house and how the Bedouin people lived. The tour was very rushed because we were picked up late from hotel. We were given free time at the Gold Souk and to meet up at 12:30 pm. We got there at 12:15 pm. and the tour guide had already left. We had to run to catch up to them.

Hated the Souks

The Dubai Museum was so crowded, people were pushing and getting into our personal space. Then the Spice Souk had merchants trowing clothes at us and one spice merchant stuck some menthol in my face and cleared my sinuses for the res of the day. The rest of the trip was ok.

Glorified shopping trip

This was a disappointment. The tour went to the museum but no other aspects of the advertised itinerary. The only other stops we were taken to were several business near the spice and gold souk and an embroidered carpet shop.

Great half day tour of Dubai..

Our guide, Asad, was very knowledgeable about the city and altered plans for us to see labor camp and middle class housing as well as taking us to a favorite Pakistani restaurant.

Poor tour guide

To start with, the minivan offered for transport was uncomfortable, had small windows, not suitable for site seeing and overall a bad choice of transport. An upgrade for a few extra Dirhams per person would have been very welcome. The tour programme itself is rather limited and lacking imagination. Dubai museum was very nice, but a major, overshadowing, part of the tour seemed to be a lengthy visit to the massive jewelry and gold market, which though glamorous, gets quite boring very quickly, especially to a tourist not interested in this kind of super-expensive stuff. The adjoining Spice market (which could be relatively interesting) was only pointed to by the guide, but we were given no time to visit it, as the guide seemed to be close to running than walking, and we had to keep pace with him or risk getting lost in the old city. I was disappointed to learn that the tour did not include the Coffee Museum, which I was looking forward to after reading the good reviews form previous visitors. The disappointment doubled when my wife asked the tour guide about it and he didn't have the slightest clue about its existence ! From the above, you can see that a major flaw in the tour was the TOUR GUIDE. The man was trying, but was not doing a good job at all. His English was quite poor, to the point that he said a few things, which I am sure he didn't mean to say them the way it sounded, it was purely his terrible English speaking and expressive ability. On top, he had a bad habit of repeating the same sentence over an over in a very boring way (may be to give himself time to think what to say next!). He talked in length about the Emirati union and government structure, and about the ethnic make up of the country and all the privileges that the Arabic locals enjoy (but not foreigners). He mentioned that there was "no corruption in the UAE" and ascribed this to the fact that all management and leadership roles are given to Arab Emiratis exclusively, and because they are privileged, they couldn't go corrupt !.. At one point it sounded as if he was saying that because the country has no democracy (but absolute Monarchy in stead) that the country was corruption - free ! to us felt as if Democracy was the source of corruption in other countries....far form being true of course and rather unfair to that really beautiful and progressive country. All that jumble was obviously originating form his severe inability to express himself in proper English, and I wish he just didn't talk politics with his poor language as he was unwittingly digging one hole after the other for himself. In short, could have easily been a much better experience with a bit of planning and mainly with a BETTER TRAINED TOUR GUIDE.
