En este recorrido a pie, retrocedemos más de 200 años, a la época en que Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles de la Compañía Británica de las Indias Orientales llegó a Singapur, fundó un puesto comercial británico en 1819, pasó a formar parte de los Asentamientos del Estrecho en 1826 y y finalmente una colonia separada de la corona británica en 1867. Visitaremos estructuras bien conservadas de las épocas georgiana, victoriana y eduardiana, y majestuosos edificios de estilo neoclásico, todos restaurados para mostrar el esplendor del Singapur colonial. Rendimos homenaje a nuestros antiguos amos coloniales que dejaron atrás su legado de cuidadosa planificación urbana, sólido sistema legal, buen sistema educativo, sólida infraestructura, impresionante arquitectura, etc., que sin duda han desempeñado un papel importante en el desarrollo del Singapur moderno. Aproximadamente al mediodía, nos relajaremos y disfrutaremos de un almuerzo junto al río Singapur en Boat Quay, antes de reanudar nuestro recorrido por el distrito cívico y la antigua ciudad europea.

Nuestra historia comienza con cómo los británicos comenzaron su puesto comercial en Singapur en 1819, donde los primeros colonos europeos construyeron sus hogares y cómo se construyó la primera iglesia anglicana en 1836.
Exploramos los dos edificios coloniales que ahora conforman la Galería Nacional de Singapur, a saber, el antiguo edificio municipal (más tarde rebautizado como edificio del Ayuntamiento) y el antiguo edificio de la Corte Suprema. Excellent. Ping (our guide) was charming, approachable and very knowledgeable. She made the whole tour interesting and relatable, taking us to some places that we would not have found if we had been independent tourists.
I couldn't fault this tour- really well researched and explained, lots of interesting information and we went into buildings that told the story of Singapore which are free for the public to go into but as a tourist you'd never know it! Ping finds plenty of seated areas either in shade or air-con to tell the story, so you never feel too hot or tired. I wish I'd done this tour the first time I came to Singapore!
The tour was very well organised by our tour guide Ping. She is very knowledgeable about Singapore and its history, and we learnt so much during our time together. I would highly recommend her tour, and we will definitely book her other tour options when we are back in Singapore.
