El baluarte está dedicado a Santiago, patrón de España, y ha tenido diversos usos a lo largo de los siglos. Tras perder su función militar, fue utilizado como matadero público, depósito de aceite y aduana.
Fue construido por orden del emperador Federico II, que creó el núcleo original. Este edificio, también llamado “castillo de tierra”, es el segundo en orden cronológico de los cuatro castillos históricos de Brindisi.
La iglesia de San Giovanni al Sepolcro, o iglesia del Santo Sepulcro, fue construida por la orden religiosa de los Canónigos Regulares del Santo Sepulcro antes de 1128, año en el que aparece el primer documento que menciona su existencia.
El nombre de la zona arqueológica deriva de la presencia, a partir de mediados del siglo XV, de una comunidad de eslavos, principalmente griegos y albaneses, que se establecieron en esta zona desde el siglo XVI y fundaron un asentamiento con la iglesia de San Pietro en el centro, del que hoy no quedan rastros materiales.
La construcción de la Catedral simbolizó el renacimiento de la ciudad, apoyada por los normandos en su expansión hacia el este. Brindisi recuperó rápidamente su papel de importante centro comercial hacia el este, convirtiéndose en un punto de tránsito esencial para quienes viajaban de Roma a Jerusalén.
El Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Brindisi, dedicado a Francesco Ribezzo, estudioso de la civilización mesapia del territorio, formaba parte del Centro Biblioteca-Museo de Brindisi, administrado por la Región de Puglia y fue fundado en 1884. Las colecciones expuestas abarcan varias secciones temáticas, entre ellas la arqueología antigua, epigráfica y estatuaria, prehistórica, mesapia, romana y subacuática.
Las columnas romanas de Brindisi se consideran uno de los símbolos de la ciudad. El origen de las columnas romanas de Brindisi es objeto de tres hipótesis principales. La teoría más acreditada sugiere que fueron erigidas alrededor del año 110 d. C. por orden del emperador Trajano y que representaban los puntos finales de la histórica Vía Apia.
Esta escalera que conecta el centro histórico de la ciudad con el paseo marítimo debe su nombre al famoso poeta Virgilio del siglo I a.C. ¡Descubriremos la conexión entre la ciudad y el poeta!
El Lungomare Regina Margherita de Brindisi es una de las zonas, en mi opinión, más bonitas para pasear en la ciudad, ofreciendo una vista panorámica del mar y del puerto.

This is my third audio guide tour that I have done in the Puglia region. I have really enjoyed them all! I like the format of the tour-you have freedom to take it at your own pace, stop when you want, listen to the audio clips again and the price is very reasonable! I definitely reccommend this style of tour if you don't want to do a guided tour or there is not one available! However I would say you need to have some (minimal) experience/understanding of technology to be able to download and use this guide to its full potential!
Simple route, clear explanations, ideal for taking a tour without breaking the bank and without the hassle of a paper guide.

There isn't a lot in Brindisi- this guide is great at finding what there is and explaining it with historic context. I especially enjoyed the Temple of San Giovanni- a Crusader Church from the 11th century. The architecture is that of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The (free) archeologic museum has a fairly extensive collection of copper and bronz and Hellenistic age objects.
Excellent presentation of monuments and historical buildings. It would be interesting to get an idea of the duration of the visit before starting. Lover of old stones and history, I did the solo course in more than 3 hours. I think it would be quite different with one family or several. Another thing: you should be able to access the map from any explanation and especially be able to return to the text quickly. I found it painful to scroll constantly to switch from one to the other. Congratulations on this remarkable work.
Really really well put together self-guided tour. The Italian has 100% improved and is a real person unlike a bit ago when it seems the comments indicated it was a robot. It was somewhat difficult to figure out how to get the walking path on Google Maps, but once I did it was great because you could map everything out! Like the title says, if you love history, this is for you. It goes in depth at each of the sites in terms of when it was built, why, etc. I realized I did not care enough for all that information so didn’t do the full tour lol but it still helped a lot in terms of figuring out great restaurants to go to! Brindisi is small so you don’t necessarily need this tour, but honestly for less than $10, even if you don’t end up doing all the tour as I didn’t, it’s still worth it I think!
Excellent walking tour off Brindisi. Walk is about 2 miles and takes 2 hours with stops. Highly recommend if you are visiting Brindisi and want to know more about this great city,
