We went on the Magic Mail Run boat trip from Picton what an amazing trip. We had a fantastic guide who gave lots of information. Mail was delivered to the rural areas and passengers on board got to deliver the mail and chat to the locals. We also saw wildlife of birds, seals and dolphins which was an added bonus A great few hours and would absolutely recommend.
Despite it being late June, the weather was excellent on the day I did this tour. The tour information asks that you turn up ½ hour before departure but I am not sure why as we did not get on the boat until 10 minutes before and there were only 5 of us. I guess in the summer when they use a larger boat and have more tourists, they might take ½ hour checking people in etc. We used one of the smaller boats. Basically it is a trip through the Queen Charlotte Sound, similar to the route my ferry had taken the day before but slower, and you nip in and out some of the bays to drop off mail and supplies. We also pulled into one of the coves to see some nesting shags and look at an oyster farm and a salmon farm. There was a seal in the water by the salmon farm but sadly we did not see dolphins. The scenery is breathtaking and i really enjoyed the tour, it is also priced competitively. I would recommend this as long as the weather is good!.
I don’t mind giving feed back but I am not writing an essay for you!! Cruise was excellent No more to say
We had the most beautiful afternoon on the Queen Charlotte Mail Cruise. Calm water, clear autumn skies, breathtaking beauty, just one of those days that feels unreal! Dylan, our skipper, really made it. He shared so much along the way that added to the whole experience, and you can tell he genuinely cares. I loved seeing how he interacted with the local dogs waiting on their jetties for the mail and their treats 🐾. Highlight of our trip! Would absolutely recommend!!
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed such a beautiful autumn afternoon out on the water, those calm, clear days in the Queen Charlotte Sounds really are something special. Dylan will be so pleased to read your kind words. He is incredibly passionate about sharing the local stories, people and unique character of the Mail Run, and of course loves seeing our little 4 legged friends who look forward to our visit as much as the humans do!
This was such an interesting experience, the weather wasn't great so it was a really good way to spend an afternoon, moving inside and out on the boat according to the weather. We helped pass the mail and grocery parcels to waiting customers whose properties were not reachable except nby water, and gave their dogs biscuits! We also saw some wildlife , but not as much as we hoped. Skipper Greg as fun and informative.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. We’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed such an interesting day out and that the flexibility of moving between inside and outside on the boat made it comfortable given the weather. It’s great to know you enjoyed being part of the mail and parcel delivery to the remote bays (and the dogs appreciated the biscuits too!). While it’s a shame you didn’t see quite as much wildlife as hoped, we’re glad the overall journey was still enjoyable. We’ll pass your kind words on to Greg, he’ll be pleased to hear you found the trip fun and informative. Thanks again for joining us, and we hope to see you back in the Marlborough Sounds another time for more wildlife encounters!
We loved the mail boat cruise and the concept of picking up bags that tourists wanted moving from one area to another to facilitate their hiking. The crew were friendly and the check in staff were excellent too. We had come in on a cruise ship and the whole thing dovetailed perfectly. We saw seals at the king salmon farm and took some great scenery photos.
Thanks so much for your lovely feedback! We’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the Mail Boat Cruise and that the luggage transfer service helped make your hiking plans run smoothly. It’s great to know everything aligned well with your cruise ship schedule, and that you got to experience the friendly crew, excellent check-in team, and some special wildlife sightings at the salmon farm. We really appreciate you choosing to travel with us and hope to welcome you back to the Marlborough Sounds again one day!
Comfortable transport and excellent commentary by skipper. Fantastic scenery and experience. Plenty of space for all on board. We stayed on the top deck all trip with warm clothes for a brisk breeze
It was a very enjoyable cruise. However they need better access on and off the launch, as for elderly people (I am 84) it was very difficult getting on and off as there is quite a big gap to step across.
Hello, thank you for your review we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your time on the Mail Boat Cruise. It can be a bit tricky as there will always be a gap between the boat and the wharf due to the fixed stairs for boarding at our wharf here in Picton, we do try our best to minimize this and have staff there to help getting on and off also.
A beautiful afternoon of sun and sparkling sea and therefore a good cruise, goign onto some small and outlying bays. This added to the atmosphere. The commentary was generally good, if a bit lackng in interesting detail, and easy to hear even on the upper deck. The pilot was interesting to talk to one to one. some of what he told us that way would have made interesting commentary. I saw a square brown disk being handed over at each landing stage and thought it was a 'we have deleveredd' token of some sort - till the thrid one was given direct to the ubiquitous dog - and he ate it. The mail boat pilot as kindly distributing dog biscuits!
Thankyou for your review! We are really happy to hear that you enjoyed your time on the Mailboat Cruise with us and got to see all of our mailboat dogs get their treats, they certainly look forward to their weekly visit!
Once again we walked the track, not the full track but had 4 great days. Easy 12-16kms each day using the mail boat to get to and from Picton each day. Stayed in a lovely apartment on the waterfront each night with the pub and restaurants right on your door. Beachcomber were great, allowing us to swap days around to suit our pace and weather and even a 10% discount for a multi day booking. We highly recommend this way of doing the Queen Charlotte Track, very relaxed and enjoyable. The afternoons waiting for the boat back to Picton are especially nice at Punga Cove and Furneux Lodge, cafe and bar at both.
Hello, thank you for your review and your great words. It was lovely to work with you both over the week and great to hear that you could take advantage of staying in Picton and transferring daily to the track, we welcome you both back anytime!
