La Gran Mezquita fue construida en un sitio que ocupa 416.000 m2 (4.480.000 pies cuadrados) y el complejo se extiende para cubrir un área de 40.000 m2 (430.000 pies cuadrados), la Gran Mezquita fue inaugurada por el Sultán de Omán el 4 de mayo de 2001, se han construido cinco minaretes alrededor de las instalaciones de la Mezquita el minarete principal (90 metros, 300 pies) de altura. La sala de oración es de forma cuadrada y 74,4 por 74,4 metros (244 por 244 pies) tiene una cúpula central que se eleva a una altura de 50 metros (160 pies) sobre el piso, la cúpula está embellecida espectacularmente desde el interior y es una atracción turística importante en sí misma, la Musalla principal (Sala de oración) puede albergar a más de 6500 fieles, el diseño principal del interior es la alfombra de oración que cubre el piso de la sala de oración, contiene, 1,700,000,000 de nudos, pesa 21 toneladas y tomó cuatro años para producir, y reúne las tradiciones de diseño clásicas persas Tabriz, Kashan e Isfahan.

Desde el zoco de Mutrah visitamos el Museo Bait Al Zubair, para una buena muestra de la cultura e historia de Omán e información sobre la Familia Real.
Continúe su viaje para visitar el viejo Mascate y ver el Palacio de Al Alam, tiene una historia de más de 200 años, y fue construido bajo la vigilancia del imán Sultán bin Ahmed, el séptimo bisabuelo directo del sultán Haitham, el palacio existente, que tiene una fachada de oro y azul, fue reconstruido como residencia real en 1972, los terrenos interiores del palacio permanecen fuera de los límites, pero se permite a los miembros del público detenerse cerca de las puertas y tomar fotografías, el Palacio se utiliza para funciones oficiales y recibe visitantes distinguidos, cuando visita las puertas principales del Palacio de Al Alam, es diferente a cualquier otra capital que visitará, el palacio en sí es elegante pero de diseño humilde, a diferencia de las grandiosas estructuras de otras capitales, elegantemente diseñado, cuenta con muchas superficies de mármol altamente pulido, los edificios gubernamentales en las inmediaciones son blancos, con tejados almenados y balcones de madera en el estilo tradicional de Omán, aunque principalmente un palacio ceremonial.
Los fuertes Jalali y Mirani, son fuertes en el puerto del viejo Mascate, los fuertes fueron construidos por los portugueses bajo Felipe I de Portugal en 1580 en una fortaleza omaní anterior para proteger el puerto después de que Mascate había sido saqueado dos veces por las fuerzas otomanas, cayó en manos de las fuerzas omaníes en 1650, durante las guerras civiles entre 1718 y 1747, los fuertes fueron capturados dos veces por los persas que habían sido invitados a asistir a uno de los imanes rivales, el fuerte fue ampliamente reconstruido más tarde.
Desde allí visitamos la Royal Opera House, es majestad el sultán Qaboos bin Said Al Said El sultán de Omán siempre ha sido un fanático de la música clásica y las artes, en 2001, el sultán ordenó la construcción de un teatro de ópera, y fue inaugurado oficialmente el 12 de octubre de 2011, la Royal Opera House refleja la arquitectura contemporánea única de Omán, y tiene una capacidad para alojar un máximo de 1,100 personas, el complejo de la Royal Opera House consta de un teatro de conciertos, auditorio, jardines paisajistas formales, mercado cultural con comercio minorista, restaurantes de lujo, y un centro de arte para producciones musicales, teatrales y operísticas.

We had a half-day private visit with Haroun who proved to be a good guide and a kind person. With us there were our children of 4 and not even a year and the latter was not very cooperative for the duration of the tour but Haroun was never impatient and indeed was really cooperative even helping us in the management.
