Greet the mountain

Kenny, our guide, was fantastic. He kept a steady pace and ensured that the group was safe and comfortable throughout the entire hike, particularly during the descent through the loose stones. He was knowledgeable about not only the mountain but the ways of the Iwi and shared that knowledge with us. I would highly recommend.

Amazing experience

We had a fantastic time on our hike with Adrift. Our guide Kenny was amazing, funny, insightful, and made my wife and I feel very safe on the mountain. Adrift was also very helpful in making sure we had the right gear and providing us with gear for hire where needed. The most beautiful hike we’ve ever been on!!

An excellent guided hike. Clear communication regarding the details of the hike. Despite the rainy weather conditions our guide had our safety always in mind. Our guide Kenny was brilliant. He was very knowledgeable about the culture and environment and highly engaging.

a great experience

When I arrived at the meeting point, I felt in good hands. The whole hike was lovingly looked after and we had a wonderful Moorish hiking guide. The 20 km has passed with the society and the landscape as if in flight. Thank you

Well-guided hike with breathtaking views

A hike to remember with breathtaking views. The guide encouraged me to do the full-day hike instead of just half, despite my knee issues, and was very supportive of the group. I wouldn’t have managed it without his help. Thank you! 🌞

I wouldnt book with Adrift unless you are 100% sure of the weather or don't mind loosing a few quid

This tour was booked for us by our tour operator. As per the joining instructions on our itinerary, "action required" and voucher, I called Adrift 24 hrs before the hike. I had been monitoring the weather which was torrential rain and high winds, and the lady I spoke to gave me the impression the walk may well be cancelled. This came as no great surprise due to the forecast. The night before the hike my husband ran into a local guide in our hotel reception. She was fairly confident we would not be hiking the crossing the next day, and helpfully provided some info on some self guided walks where the weather might not be so bad. 7am the morning of our hike, I checked the govt website and it came as no surprise to see that the official stance was not to attempt the crossing. I was very surprised to check the Adrift website which confirmed the hike was going ahead. So, I called them and they confirmed that the hike was indeed going ahead. We turned up, met our guide and they confirmed it was going ahead. It was very windy with torrential rain. They made sure we were correctly dressed for the weather and off we went. It was suggested that we may have to turn back, but the mood was "better than spending the day in your hotel room". I asked about the Govt guidance and was told they could still take us out although shuttles were not allowed to run. We signed their T&Cs and off we went. Cancellation was not mentioned. Right from the off the conditions were terrible. Our guide mentioned he had been surprised to get the early morning call to take a group up, and no one else had been willing to take a group out. I believe that no other tour agencies were operating. Our guide gave us the option to turn around several times. But we were a small group of only 5 fairly fit hikers, and were happy to press on despite the most appalling conditions. Eventually just after 5kms our guide decided it was too dangerous to continue, and we turned back. I'm afraid this came as no surprise. Adrift's agenda from the start was undoubtedly to get us on the track and not to cancel with the associated refund. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about our guide or driver, my issue lies with the practices of Adrift, which were clearly to get us on the track whatever the weather. After aborting the Alpine Crossing, 3 of the 5 did walk to some falls with the guide. I was wet through so decided to go back to my hotel, but after a hot shower and change of clothes I walked the falls self guided later that same day. Adrift seemed to think if they kept us out of our hotel rooms for the day then not cancelling the Alpine Crossing was acceptable. Interestingly the weather the following day was even worse, but their website had the same message that they were going ahead. On a final point, on reading Adrift's T&Cs it states that if you call to confirm 24 hrs prior to the trip, you then can't cancel on the day. But we didn't see the T&Cs or agreed to them until we signed them in their office on the day of the hike. Overall, I felt like the victim of a bizarre scam. I did refer to my tour operator and directly to Adrift. Ultimately a partial refund was received. On discussing this with a neighbour who has lived in NZ and who took 3 attempts to do the crossing due to poor weather (self-guided), she said that Adrift are known for this practise - get you on the mountain whatever the weather, abort the mission, then they don't have to refund.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry your experience didn’t meet expectations and that the weather conditions made for such a challenging day. Safety is always our top priority. While conditions were wet and windy, they remained within our operational safety parameters for guided trips. The government advisories you’ve referred to apply to independent hikers and shuttle services, rather than guided groups, which operate under different safety frameworks and risk management procedures. There are a few points in your review that don’t align with our understanding of the day, and we will follow these up internally with the guide to ensure everything was communicated clearly. We’re glad to hear you felt well looked after by your guide and driver, and we appreciate you acknowledging them. If you would like to discuss your experience further, please feel free to contact us directly.

A unique experience and one to remember

The trip was sensational, with unique views. The guides were knowledgeable, very supportive and put safety first at all times. The 20km route was a good physical challenge and very satisfying to complete. It was important to be physically able as the climbs and descents were tough on the lungs and legs.

Great experience with fantastic guide.

It is a great experience and Luke, our guide, made it possible for us to complete the walk in a safe and knowledgeable manner. The hike itself was not a walk in the park with plenty of steps up and down, with steep climbs in between. But the scenery was amazing and well worth the exhausting effort. My wife who is very nervous of heights said that is something to be considered if you are doing the walk, but Luke stayed with her and his support and encouragement enabled her to overcome her fear. In our opinion a guide is the best way to experience this adventure.
