El Canal de Otaru es un elemento básico clásico cuando se trata de lugares turísticos famosos de Hokkaido. Una vez que el centro de distribución de Hokkaido, se jactó de una población que incluso superó a la de Sapporo. En ese momento, el canal se usaba para descargar barcos a través de barcazas, y se estableció para alargar la distancia en que se podían distribuir los bienes. Finalmente, el canal ya no era necesario para cumplir su función una vez que se establecieron los muelles y se vaciaría. Sin embargo, actualmente se erige como un lugar para que los ciudadanos y turistas se relajen y disfruten con sus paseos marítimos y lámparas de gas que iluminan las riberas de los ríos.
Los edificios históricos de la ciudad de Otaru de principios del siglo XX ahora se utilizan como diversos recursos para el turismo. La base de arte Otaru ubicada frente al canal Otaru al otro lado de la calle Rinkosen es una de esas instalaciones. Hay cuatro edificios históricos donde se reunieron 20 de los bancos más grandes de Hokkaido, anteriormente el centro de la economía de Hokkaido conocida como "North Wall Street". Lo que fue la antigua sucursal de Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru, como se ve en la imagen, ahora alberga el Museo de Arte Nitori e incluye exhibiciones como pinturas japonesas y extranjeras, tallas de madera y más. En el sótano encontrará la galería de cristal Art Nouveau Art Déco.
Si viaja por placer, querrá disfrutar de comidas gourmet y de compras. Ambos se pueden hacer en la calle comercial Sakaimachi Dori de Otaru, ubicada en el lado interior de la calle Rinkosen, paralela al canal de Otaru. Es una calle de sentido único que se extiende a unos 900 metros desde North Wall Street hasta Marchen Crossroads, donde se encuentra la sucursal Otaru del Banco de Japón. Ambos lados de la calle están llenos de antiguas tiendas comerciales y edificios de estilo occidental. Cerca del Canal de Otaru, es otro lugar turístico muy popular.
Otaru puede ser conocido por su influencia nostálgica de edificios históricos occidentales y artesanías de vidrio, pero también hay un lugar que transmite la historia de Japón desde hace mucho tiempo. Uno de estos lugares es la fábrica de cerveza Tanaka Sake, fundada en 1899. Aquí se fabrican muchos tipos de bebidas alcohólicas, incluido el vino de ciruela, el sake dulce y, por supuesto, el amado sake local de Otaru, Takaragawa. Our guide, Fumiko Yoshizawa was delightful. It was a particularly cold day and she brought us hand warmers which was so very thoughtful. Clearly Fumiko loves her city and loves sharing it with visitors. She contacted us several times before the tour to ensure when and where to meet her. She took us to a local restaurant that we would not have found on our own and guided us to try dishes we probably would not have tried without her encouragement. The food was delicious. She took us to several places and gave us rest periods as needed. She is a great tour guide.

Bad tour. Waste of money. I could not understand the guide. His English was terrible. Really nothing to see, except shops to spend money on stuff I don’t want or need.

It was disappointing to learn that the museum we had originally planned to close was closed, but he quickly suggested the Otaru General Museum. There, we learned about the history of Otaru while listening to the guide. We met our guide, Mr. Yakuwa, for the first time in the lobby of the hotel where we were going to stay, and he was a dandy man about the same age as us, so we were able to ask him to guide us with peace of mind. At a sushi restaurant that Mr. Hakkuwa had booked in advance for lunch, we had a good meal. After that, the half day was full of shopping in Sakaimachi street, exploring the canal, and enjoying delicious sweets as a break. Thank you very much. As a side note, our dinner was undecided, but the beer restaurant that our guide told us about just before we parted was great in terms of atmosphere and taste.
