If you're looking to escape the city for an adventure, I highly recommend the Montserrat hiking tour with the Catalan Trails company. Our guide, Burnat, was like a walking history book and storyteller—extremely knowledgeable about the area's history, Catalan culture, geology, trees and local plants. He also knew the best rock-climbing spots, hidden shortcuts, and the most spectacular viewpoints along the trail. The hike itself was perfect: not too easy and not too difficult—I'd describe it as a moderate-level hike. If you choose the optional climb to the summit, it's absolutely worth the effort. Overall, it was an unforgettable hiking experience!
A very nice, informative, and entertaining trip from Barcelona. Great impressions in a beautiful landscape, with breathtaking views. You get a very good impression of the monastery, the church, its history, and the nature in the surrounding mountains. In addition to historical facts, which are never presented in a boring manner, there are also explanations about geology, flora, and fauna. With a young, nice, athletic tour guide who is very considerate of all participants, it is incredibly fun. Be sure to wear good and comfortable footwear (closed shoes). Overall, the hike is about 6 km, mostly downhill, as the elevation difference is overcome at the beginning by the cogwheel train. You are back at the meeting point in Barcelona in the afternoon and can calmly plan for the evening. Thanks to the organizers, highly recommended. A small note: if you want to visit the museum, there is no time for that.
An incredible experience and our guide was fabulous! She was simply terrific.
Truly, the most unique experiences I’ve ever had. My favorite part was the breathtaking views from above during the hike. I also loved the cable car experience. To be in the same place that the pope will be visiting next month was an unforgettable experience.
This was a wonderful way to get out of the city and see beautiful Montserrat. The monastery was beautiful, and the hike was challenging, with gorgeous views all along the way. Our guide was fabulous, and the trip was with a fun group of people. Highly recommended.
This was a perfect tour! Our guide Bernat made a very nice and interesting hike with us after visiting the monastery church. He knows a lot, is very communicative and has given us a lot of useful information. We can/will gladly recommend this tour. Organization: also perfect.
This tour ended up being one of the standout experiences of our trip. Christian was an exceptional guide- engaging, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the area. Our group happened to be up for a more active day, which allowed us to extend the hike beyond the standard route and continue up toward “The Needles.” That extra portion made the experience feel truly unique. The monastery itself was impressive, and Christian did a great job providing context without ever making it feel like a lecture. We took the funicular partway up the mountain, which was enjoyable (and a hit with the kids), and from there had the option to keep going up on foot. Christian checked in with the group before continuing, as the extended hike depends on both conditions and group ability. Fortunately, everything lined up, and we continued along a series of beautiful trails and stairways leading to several of the hermitages connected to the monastery. At the higher point, we paused briefly for water and a snack- definitely worth bringing both. The descent back down took about an hour, and along the way Christian shared insights into the geology, history, and even some of the ongoing excavation work, which added a lot of depth to the experience. After returning to the monastery, we spent a little time at the outdoor market picking up local cheeses and honey before heading back to Barcelona. This tour was really especially memorable. I would absolutely recommend Catalan Trails Hiking Experiences to anyone looking for a well-run and rewarding excursion outside of Barcelona.

We hope to welcome you back for another adventure in the future! Warm regards, The Catalan Trails Team
Our visit to Montserrat was truly unforgettable. Cristian was a wonderful guide — incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, bringing the history and stories of Montserrat to life with depth and color. We learned so much and felt deeply connected to the significance of this remarkable place. The hike was absolutely stunning. With perfect blue skies and sunshine, we were surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and extraordinary views in every direction. The combination of nature, spirituality, and history made this experience incredibly special. It was a memorable day for both my 17-year-old son and me, and one we will always treasure. Highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to experience the magic of Montserrat in a meaningful and inspiring way.

Christian gave our family a wonderful tour and hike around Monserrat. The tour started with a little history of the town and monastery. We were given time to walk through the beautiful church and admire all of its beauty. Then off to the hike! The hike started on a paved path up a somewhat steep hill. The views along the way are gorgeous! This part of the hike is a little strenuous, but most should be able to complete. After this point, we ventured off the paved trail and into the beauty of the trails along the mountainside to take in more natural beauty. This part was a bit more strenuous and could be challenging for anyone with knee or joint issues as the trail is uneven in many spots and filled with stones, which were wet from the mountain mist and recent rains. We reached near the summit where the funicular stops and rested for a bit and could have a little lunch if you brought it with you. Then the descent. These trails also are uneven and filled with stones. The final portion of the descent is on a large swath of stairs going down the mountain…again, many uneven and worn. Given the number of stairs, this could also be challenging if you suffer from knee issues. Legs were definitely wobbly after this hike up and down, but we made it and enjoyed all the beauty that Monserrat offers! Definitely want to bring some water for the hike! We then had about 40 minutes to visit the shops and the local farmers market where they sold wonderful cheeses and local goods. In all, Christian was a wonderful guide. Just be prepared with appropriate shoes and water…a light snack for the summit is also not a bad idea to bring on the hike.
Thank you so much for sharing such a detailed and thoughtful review! We’re thrilled to hear that Christian provided a wonderful experience for your family and that you enjoyed both the history and natural beauty of Montserrat. You captured the hike perfectly—yes, it can be a bit challenging in spots, but the views and the sense of accomplishment at the summit make it all worthwhile. We really appreciate you highlighting the tips about proper shoes, water, and a light snack—these are so helpful for future visitors! It’s also great to hear you enjoyed the local market and had a chance to experience the local flavors. We hope to welcome you back on another adventure soon, maybe to explore even more of the beautiful trails Catalonia has to offer! Warm regards, The Catalan Trails Team
