The Golan Heights is a rocky plateau, it was captured by Israel from Syria in 1967 during the Six Day War. The Heights overlook the Galilee region. An enemy sniper can easily pick off anyone working in the fields or moving through this fertile region. The Golani Brigade, a unit of the IDF, captured the region. These days, the Golan Heights area creates wine and other agricultural products. Israel is unlikely to return the Golan Heights to Syria, given its strategic importance. However, the view is certainly fascinating.
If you'd like a terrific, knowledgeable guide to show you around the Golan Heights region and/or the Sea of Galilee, we can't recommend Maayan enough. He is a botanist and historian. Ask to see the newly reconstructed temple (previously destroyed in an earthquake). Or go to the Syrian border. Wherever Maayan takes you, you'll learn and experience a lot. We did a full day tour with Maayan in our own rental car. Driving in the volcanic geography of the Golan in something I'll always remember. It is just spectacularly beautiful...
Shachar was an amazing guide for our family. We have 4 young children and he was able to perfectly tailor our trip for our needs. Everything was age appropriate and engaging. Each activity was better than the last. He knows all the hidden gems throughout the country and is incredibly knowledgeable. I highly recommend Shachar to anyone traveling to Israel especially if you have a young family.
I want to first speak about the guide our group had for a tour which included the Golan Heights which was an incredible site. The guide, part of the Rent-a-Guide group, was beyond spectacular! His name is Meni Tzabari. He was charming, funny, extremely knowledgeable and informed, but more than all of that he had great compassion and empathy. I miss him now that our tour is changing and I am going to Eilat. Anyone who is lucky enough to get him as a guide is in for a marvelous experience. He made my trip to Israel so very memorable! I cannot say enough wonderful things about Meni!
