Must do!! 1 of the best experiences we had in Vietnam. Would definitely recommend the market tour before as well. Thom did an amazing job teaching about the food/cooking and the Vietnamees habits.
One of the (of probably the) most amazing experience we have had in Vietnam! From the early morning market to the boat trip to grandma’s kitchen on the river Island, everything was amazing. Thuum (Thom) and het family are fabulous hosts! Friendly, knowledgeable and of course great cooks (and instructors). We have learned a lot, had great fun doing karaoke on the boat and the meal was so tasty! Would definitely book again if I had the chance!
My Grandma’s Home Cooking Class was one of the highlights of our trip to Hoi An. Instead of just another cooking class in a hotel or restaurant in Hoi An, this was also an interesting excursion to a rural village outside Hoi An. And, excitedly, ‘Grandma’ turned out to be our guide Thom’s own grandmother, now 101. She no longer meets guests because of her age and blindness, but it was still exciting to see ‘Grandma’ from a distance as she still lives in her small house on the property. I would highly recommend this cooking class as a very authentic experience and glimpse into rural family life. The cooking classes are conducted outdoors, under cover, at the back of the family property. While other family members prepared the ingredients, we had time to sit down with our guide/cooking teacher Thom and talk to her about growing up in this village and life, generally, in Vietnam. During the cooking demonstrations, Thom’s aunty and other relatives from their house across the little natural pathway dropped in to say hello – and some of the neighbours said hello while walking past. We were very glad we took Thom’s advice to eat a light breakfast. With her easy to follow instructions, we cooked a few meals which we then enjoyed eating. There was plenty of very tasty food! The journey to the village, with Thom and a driver in a private car, was a great opportunity to experience the countryside and we really enjoyed the approx. 40-minute boat trip back to Hoi An – a different view of fishermen and their riverside homes. And, now back in Australia, we are looking forward to cooking ‘Grandma’s’ own special recipes from her recipe book we were given on our return to the office.
Fantastic Day with our wonderful guide and Chef Thom!! She was so knowledgeable, and shared lots of local stories and information. A perfect opportunity to get out of the tourist areas and have an experience in a local village. The food we cooked was delicious and we will easily be able to make again at home.
Having done many cooking classes we wanted something that was a bit different. This was it. A small group that went to Thoms Grandmas house to cook traditional Vietnamese food. We boards a boathouse a 45 minute trip to the island where the house was. This was not your traditional commercial kitchen but so much more. Had a local feel and allowed us to cook amazing dishes. They also catered for food allergies without any issues. We made our own rice paper. Cooked beautiful chicken, mad a traditional Vietnamese pancake followed by is papaya salad and fish. All food was tasty. We also got a recipe book fireball the dishes we cooked. I would highly recommend this day out.
This was an amazing experience not the normal big group commercialized cooking class. On the island in the home of Thom"s Grandma which made it a local cultural typical Vietnamese experience. We learned so much about the eating culture, local food, traditions & preparation. Since it was a small group we could ask anything and Thom was happy to share information with us. I really enjoyed the fact that we prepared everything ourselves & nothing was pre - prepared. Only local fresh organic ingredients were used. It was clean & hygienic
What a great way to spend the day. Learnt alot, great to experience the local market and a great way to learn how to enjoy the local cuisine. It was great to enjoy the family experience. Thom was a fabulous host and guide. Can’t recommend enough.
The organization, the quality of the service, the friendliness, the variety of activities. We had a great time.
Great experience! Really special, good food and Thom is very good in explaining everything. Would definitely recommend!
We had a wonderful experience with our guide, Na, at Grandma's home on an island in the river. We had a short walk from town to a medium-sized boat, then a 45 minute ride to the island. We made four dishes there, all of them excellent! We were also provided recipes for the dishes we made with some potential American substitutions. We also saw the traditional way of husking rice and separating the good rice from the chaff, then made rice paper that we later are in spring rolls. A 30 minute walk back to the boat (different spot than the drop off) with some glimpses of Vietnamese island life. Overall a wonderful experience, highly recommended! Thank you, Na!
