A very interesting tour with a really nice guide! We got to see different neighborhoods and definitely learned a lot! Thanks
Seeing Athens through the lens of street art was an amazing experience. Thomas, my guide, took me through different neighborhoods and showed me murals, graffiti, and street art that tell the story of Athens in a way you don’t get from monuments alone. Many of the works reflected the city’s political history over the last 30 to 40 years — corruption, protest, government overreach, and the tension between citizens and power. Others were memorials to people who have passed, turning public walls into places of memory. It was Athens from a different angle: raw, political, personal, and alive.
Thomas was a great guide, super knowledgeable. We loved seeing a street level, less touristy version of Athens, and Thomas gave us some great recommendations for the city. Highly recommend.
Thomas is clearly an authority on the history of graffiti, street art, and murals in the Athens neighborhoods. He has a great unhurried approach, encourages questions and feedback, and a great sense of humor. He has great knowledge of history of neighborhoods. He and Kalliopi have packaged great photos and recommendations of all sorts of things to do in Athens. It’s an awesome tour, not to be missed!
This was truly one of the most memorable experiences of my trip to Athens. Whether you have been here before or not, I highly recommend this tour as an incredible lens through which to appreciate the city and its more recent history. I can see people from all different backgrounds and interests appreciating this tour, as street art speaks to so many current themes in the world. The tour covers a huge portion of the city, including neighborhoods we were not likely to venture into on our own, with our guide, Kalliope, regularly pointing out more places to explore later. And just when we felt we needed a break, she was already taking us to a favorite coffee stop - and explaining more about Greek coffee culture! If this is your first visit to Athens or Greece, this would certainly be a wonderful experience to orient you. As someone who has been to Greece many times (and has a background in art history), I felt this tour presented a much deeper understanding of the modern Greek perspective, as well as offered a crash course in mural art, its history, and the significance of its messaging. Kalliope also clearly knew many of the artists personally and understood the medium from her own experience, and was therefore able to explain their work from an authentic place. Thank you so much, Kalliope, for your invaluable and truly unique perspective on mural art and artists. I highly recommend this tour and would even take it again in the future - there will always be more street art and more it has to say to the world, and I look forward to hearing more from your viewpoint!
It was a super interesting tour, with a lot of inside knowledge about the street art scene in Athens. Our guide Thomas, has skillfully guided us through the city. He also explained a lot to us about the development of the city, highlighted art and artists and the differences between the works of art and explained similarities. We were able to experience a different kind of Athens than classical Athens and were impressed by the variety, beauty and socio-critical expression of some of the artworks. Just great!
Such a great way to learn more about the “other side” of Greek history and culture. A great complement to the archaeological and ancient history that dominates the tourist perspective. Kalliope was a phenomenal guide sharing insights about the art, the community, life and politics. Highly highly highly recommended. Very grateful to have had the opportunity.
This is a great tour for anyone who is interested in art, architecture or contemporary Greek politics and protests. Much of the street art you see has a political message. Katerina is a wonderful and knowledgeable guide who speaks fluent English and is herself a street artist. Even if you are familiar with the neighborhoods you walk through (Keremeikos and Psirri mostly), you will gain insights and be taken to city blocks you've never before seen. Highly recommended!
It was very exciting. And also like a city tour, highly recommended! Kaliopi knows the Athens street art scene very well and took time to answer questions. We now see the city through different eyes.
Incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and detailed tour of not only amazing graffiti and the meaning behind it and the artists, but of Greek culture, the different areas of the city and even restaurant and bar recommendations. Highly recommend.
