fue construido a mediados del siglo V, a instancias de Galla Placidia, quien gobernó el Imperio Romano Occidental. Este pequeño mausoleo de cruz latina, por fuera es muy sencillo, mientras que por dentro tiene una rica decoración en mosaico. Las innumerables estrellas de la cúpula han impresionado la imaginación y la sensibilidad de los visitantes a lo largo de los siglos, así como destacadas personalidades como el gran poeta Dante Alighieri, que se inspiró en ellas para la redacción de algunos versos de la Divina Comedia.
Es uno de los monumentos más importantes del arte cristiano primitivo en Italia. El monumento es del siglo VI, de clara influencia oriental, tiene un plan octogonal, coronado por una gran cúpula con frescos. Cuando uno ingresa a la basílica, la mirada es capturada por los altos espacios, las estupendas decoraciones de mosaico del ábside y la extraordinaria representación de la pareja imperial de Bizancio, Giustiniano y Teodora, con sus desfiles.

Dominando la cúpula, encargada por el obispo Neone a mediados del siglo V, se encuentra el escenario del Bautismo de Cristo rodeado por una refinada procesión de los doce Apóstoles que se destaca sobre un brillante fondo de teselas azules. En el interior se conserva la pila bautismal de época renacentista, que retoma la forma octogonal del plano del baptisterio y que conserva el ambón del siglo V.

Our guide Chiara was wonderful, passionate and very clear in her explanations. We opted for the tour of the 5 monuments. The guide (Sergio) was experienced and very friendly and gave us a lot of insight - background information, artistic details and stories we would otherwise have missed out. The tour also had educational value for our children (13 and 11).
I had the pleasure of repeating the "mosaic by night" experience after visiting San Vitale and Galla Placidia last year, also at night. This time I admired the Neonian Baptistery and Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, two true wonders of Ravennate art. Evocative experience immersed in the dreamy and suspended atmosphere of Ravenna at night.
