La Gran Esfinge de Guiza es uno de los monumentos más emblemáticos de Egipto y del mundo. Es una estatua de piedra caliza con el cuerpo de un león y la cabeza de un hombre, que se cree que representa al faraón Khafre (constructor de la segunda pirámide en Guiza). La Esfinge mide unos 73 metros de largo y 20 metros de alto, lo que la convierte en la estatua monolítica más grande del mundo antiguo. Se orienta directamente hacia el este, hacia el sol naciente, y fue visto como un poderoso guardián de la meseta de Guiza. La estatua tiene más de 4.500 años de antigüedad (que data de alrededor del 2500 a. C.).
