Descripción
Una excursión imprescindible, fumarolas de gran magnitud, vale la pena madrugar, es necesario abrigarse mucho para capear las temperaturas de -10 a -15 grados. Un entorno maravilloso que ofrece la oportunidad de estar muy cerca de distintos tipos de Geysers que muy temprano a la mañana ofrecen imponentes fumarolas. Ofrecemos un rico desayuno y paradas en ruta para ver y observar la Flora y Fauna del Altiplano. Altitud 4.320 msnm. aprox.

El Tatio (del Kunza “tata-iu”) que significa “el abuelo que llora”, es uno de los campos de Geiser más altos del mundo. Ubicado en el cordón de los andes al NE de San Pedro de Atacama es el grupo más grande de geiser del hemisferio sur y el tercero más grande del mundo, tras Yellowstone (EEUU) y Dolina Giezerow (Rusia). La máxima expresión de estas fumarolas comienza entre las 06:00 y 07:00Hrs. Aprox. Con temperaturas que alcanzan los 85 C. En nuestro regreso es posible observar fauna como vicuñas, llamas, ñandúes, vizcachas, etc. Mientras que en la Flora sobresalen los Cactus gigantes, llaretas, coirón, etc. Observaremos desde un mirador, el pequeño pueblo ancestral de Machuca sus escasos habitantes se dedican principalmente del pastoreo y producción de queso, muy cerca del lugar se encuentra la Laguna Salada donde habitan familias de flamencos, patos y gaviotas con un paisaje imponente de belleza.

I truly enjoyed my El Tatio Geyser tour with Marta and Andres. The communication leading up to the tour was excellent. They weee very clear about what clothing to wear (it can be very cold in the winter, so bring everything they suggest and you will be perfect). I really appreciated the door to door service, especially since the tour started very early in the morning. The bus was comfortable and climate controlled for the one and a half hour drive. Marta conducted the tour in Spanish and English which was very helpful. The tour stops were incredible. The geysers were interesting and beautiful but it was the overall experience of how the landscape transforms as the sun rises that I will remember. While the geysers were the highlight, the lagoon, wildlife, and flamingos were absolutely unique to Chile and made for an excellent tour.

We booked the tour with Whipala, and they picked us up on time at the hotel without any issues. We had Martha as our guide and Orlando as our driver. They were quite friendly, respectful, and enjoyed sharing with the group and getting to know us. The tour begins in the early morning since it takes almost 2 hours to arrive. Martha gave us safety instructions and guided us on the walk to see the fumaroles and geysers. She explained the history of the place and recommended spots for photos, even offering to take pictures for us to have an excellent memory of the place. The walk is light; the hard part is the cold. Today we experienced -13°C with a lower wind chill. It is necessary to dress warmly in layers and not overexert oneself to avoid altitude sickness. At the end of the walk, they provided us with an excellent breakfast to replenish our energy. During the return journey, Martha showed us the local wildlife (flamingos, vicuñas, Andean geese, vizcachas, Andean foxes), and Orlando always stopped to give us time to observe and take photos.
This was a fantastic tour! Our guide, Alex, was lovely and funny and provided us with a lot of very cool facts about the geysers and different historical facts. I would caution anyone who does this trip to make sure they have a WARM winter jacket- we did not dress adequately unfortunately and suffered for it but they did warn us in advance!
