Overall a good day out on the reef. Weather was sunny but quite rough coming back, so check weather in advance if you’re prone to sea sickness. I’ve been on a number of reef snorkelling trips and this was good but not great. GOOD; boat was in excellent condition and comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful, and observed safety well. Lunch was decent and varied. Snorkel location was decent with healthy coral, lots of fish and good visibility. NOT GOOD; Boat didn’t change location after lunch, so second snorkel session was in the same place. Snorkelling gear was basic, with cheap inflexible snorkels without a lower valve or wave guard. Many wetsuits were in poor condition with obvious large tears and holes in them, making them far less effective in the cold August water temp. No coffee (even instant) included in lunch or morning/afternoon tea, but had to be purchased separately which is a bit of a money grab given the price of the tour.
We chose to go on this tour as we only have a few days in Hamilton Island. The crew did say the weather was not good and chances are we may not get to snorkel before we even left. Being optimistic we hoped to snorkel but unfortunately the sea was too rough. The staff on board were lovely and tried to very hard to bost some of the guys who were disappointed. Unfortunately you cant change the weather and this would be unfair to judge the service the trip because of this. We spotted whales and the most beautiful rainbow emerged over the island. They offered a refund but we have chose to try again tomorrow.
Pros: -Staff was super nice and friendly. Staff was great! -The boat was large and comfortable. -Good variety of alcohol, coffee and sodas for purchase. -Equipment was good, had no issues. Cons: -Snacks and tea was fine, but lunch was terrible! It was literally cold cuts and bread. I was shocked at how lame the lunch was. I wish they did charge us for lunch and I would have just bought a loaf of bread, and a package of meat & cheese myself. -It was a large group. We had 50-60 people with us. This made things take a while. Also, since there were so many people, the snorkeling could felt crowded. -We did not go to where we were initially planned to go, so we went to the alternative location, which was underwhelming. For the price we paid, I was expecting to be blown away and it was just fine snorkeling. If I were to do it all over again, I'd go with a smaller company.
Our family of five spent over $2,700 across two tours with this company, making it our largest holiday expense outside of accommodation. Given the premium price tag, our expectations were high, but the experience simply did not deliver on value. The Outer Reef trip had several significant downsides. The boat ride out was incredibly bumpy, leaving two of our family members severely seasick—a watch-out for anyone prone to motion sickness. Once there, the escorted snorkel felt chaotic and poorly organised. There was no separation based on swimming ability or experience, resulting in everyone being herded together. Initially, it felt like swimming in soup, and water visibility was a major challenge. The absolute saving grace of the day was spotting several whales around the reef. Thank goodness we did, otherwise, we would have left completely disappointed. The food was also a massive letdown. For the price paid, we expected quality catering, but it felt like a cheap canteen lunch. To rub salt into the wound, you are expected to pay extra for bottled water, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages. Overall, we cannot justify the heavy expense of this tour and would recommend families look into alternative operators.
We did the half day snorkelling tour from Hamilton Island Marina (which is not listed to review). After one hour trip on the quite comfortable catamaran, we stopped at Butterfly Bay on the north side of Hook Island. The crew were very good in asking every customer their fitness level, health, and water ability. We were given wetsuits which were in absolutely the worst, most abysmal condition, threadbare in areas, torn, full of holes, and either kid size, medium or X large. The flippers were ok and I was very happy with the goggles and snorkel. Once in the water, we were herded together regardless of ability, and it was like pea soup! All bumping into each other and no space to enjoy the experience. If we drifted away from the mob, we were yelled at and directed back into the group. It is the only snorkelling tour I’ve ever done where we were totally contained all together. Maybe because there were about 50 of us in the water, and 3 staff to keep an eye on us all, regardless of ability. I would suggest that the nervous or beginner snorkellers be given a specific colour noodle and be kept under closer watch, while more experienced snorkellers be given a bit more freedom and extra area to explore. The afternoon consisted of cheese and crackers, and a fruit platter. So make sure you have lunch beforehand. The staff were really friendly as was the skipper. But the wetsuits absolutely need replacing. If you’re an experienced snorkeller, this is not the tour for you. Having said all that, the fish were plentiful and the coral has recovered quite well after the cyclone up this way in 2017.
Had a great trip and day at the reef. Snorkeling was fun and safe. Felt very cared for by the crew. Flynn was especially kind and helpful. Thank you Explore Group for a wonderful memory.
Never got to the Barrier due to bad weather. Just repeated a couple of island dives we did 3 days earlier. Like ordering a BMW & getting a Carola. Crew new 2 days earlier but customers only told 15 min before boarding the boat. No refunds or discounts for providing half the trip. I appreciate they can't fix the weather but seems Explore just keep take the money & us suckers keep turning up. The staff tried their best to give a reasonable day but I've dive the Great Barrier & there is no comparison between an island reef dive & outer Great barrier dive. One is nice & one is an experience of a life time. Be aware, during certain times of the year, 50% of the trips never get to the Barrier!!
Just be mindful of the weather, as our trip needed to be altered. The 2 reefs they stopped at the water was murky and visibility was poor making it difficult to see marine life. Whilst I understand that this was out of their control, l felt disappointed as l was looking forward to this day out and seeing the Great Barrier Reef. Due to the poor weather conditions, they added an extra stopped for a short time at Whitehaven Beach which I thoroughly enjoyed. Food provided on board was mediocre and there wasn't enough for all guests. Staff were excellent and very accommodating.
We were disappointed that the weather meant that we could not go as far as we hsd hoped but we appreciated every concern for our safety, particularly given our lack of recent sea snorkelling. There was a good staff to guest ratio. Two members stood out, one for a personal but helpful gesture of tying a scrunchie , and the other for Linda, was outstanding. Not only did she help practically with the suit and ensuring I didn’t drown, her demeanour inspired confidence and joy. She was delightful., unassuming and entirely professional.. without her the dy would have been memorable for all the wrong reasons. Thank you, Linda
My first time snorkeling and I was nervous but it was the most amazing experience and I can't wait to do it again! We saw so much of the reef and every variety of fish. The staff were lovely and so helpful and lovely buffet lunch and snacks
