Our tour guide was nice and communicated well. Before and during the tour I emphasized that I had my grandchildren with me and really wanted to concentrate on the history of the Revolutionary War. He proceeded to take us to many Philadelphia sites of interest that had nothing to do with the Revolution. Nice, but not the history I wanted. He also has bought into the narrative that everything the founders did was only to keep their slaves. When talking about a founder, the main thing we heard was how many slaves he owned, with very little of what he contributed to our country’s founding. We were told that Philadelphia did not become our nation’s capital because if you brought a slave with you, the law said he/she would be free after nine years. That may have been a consideration, but certainly not the only one. Chattel slavery is evil and we must never allow that again. But when teaching of our country’s founding, that must not be the only point we hear. With all their faults, our founders were still wise, strong, and brave. We can also learn from that.
We had a great tour with Arielle. Knowledgeable and energetic about the subject matter, and did a great job giving us a tour catering to our interests. Even managed to secure tickets last minute for entry to one of the most memorable parts of the tour!
Steven with Guydees did a great job and went at my wife’s pace using a walker. He knew his history well. Unfortunately some sites were closed with the government shutdown.
