Seeing the pandas was honestly amazing and they are the cutest animals. However the reason I gave this activity 3 stars is basically just the price of the experience. If we had paid half the price I would have said it was worth the money and was an incredible experience but as much as I enjoyed seeing the pandas up close and helping out I just could not justify the price we paid. We paid €430 for the two of us to hit bamboo for 20 minutes, cut up some bamboo leaves, roll some dough and watch a documentary. I don’t want it to seem like we did not enjoy it as we very much did but the price was ridiculous. The only perk I think of doing the volunteer programme is seeing a panda up close eating his snacks, we just were not allowed to take pictures, which I can understand. I understand that it’s a research base that depends on volunteer contributions but I think that there should not be a fixed amount of approx €110 euro each to volunteer and that it should be a donation amount of our choosing. I feel like it is not worth the extra €110 each on top of the money you spend to get in/ transport/ guide to just get that bit closer to a panda. Again I don’t think there is anything wrong with the volunteer activities we did it’s just the price. We kind of laughed at it afterwards because we paid twice as much as everyone else to do work. Our guide Perry was pleasant and so was our driver. I have a feeling that foreign tourists are charged a lot more than locals/ Chinese tourists for this experience as there was a lot of kids on our tour and I doubt a volunteer donation of €110 each was given. We just had a feeling that forging tourists get a bit ripped off with this attraction. Was still a lovely day nonetheless and I think the work they for the pandas is just phenomenal.
Thanks a lot for your feedback, honestly speaking, as an travel agency, we think the volunteer price charged by Panda Center is ridiculous high, too, but the Chinese pay the same for sure, such as the student volunteers you saw in the center, they organized by the school and they pay even more, because the schools and teachers do this as business. More that 15 years ago, when the volunteer program first started, people can feed the pandas, can holding a baby panda for photo, and posted their feeding panda experience and photos on the internet, this has drawn protests from animal rights activists and NGOs, forced the panda center stopped to allow feeding, photographing, especially after COVID-19, even not possible get a little close to the pandas, maybe one day in the future, the whole volunteer program will be stopped, let’s wait and see!
