Francis was knowledgeable not just about the sites but about Chinese history. Very good English as well.
Excellent guide Fred was knowledgeable and informative about the history of the sites we visited. Highly recommend..
My “cultural highlights” tour of Nanjing was a stellar experience. I cannot praise Li, my guide, highly enough. She was informative, communicative, solicitous and funny. Full of pertinent facts on the history and culture of Nanjing and how it is woven into the history of China. Her command of colloquial English is brilliant (but let us not mention soup/soap eh Li 😉😂). Our walking tour of the Tombs and Temples was conducted at a perfect pace, with Li having facts to share at every turn. Our cultural day was punctuated by light lunch at a quiet out-of-the-way restaurant that no casual tourist would have found on their own where the duck was excellent! We travelled between the sights in comfort and perfect safety amid the hullaballoo of Nanjing traffic, picked up and dropped at each stage timely and efficiently. For those like me who are new to China, you will find that at the major tourist spots explanatory signs and labelling is provided in English translation (and of course for me Li was a living encyclopedia of facts and stats), but I would recommend a translator app for added help in some places. Overall 6 stars out of 5 for Li, for Nanjing and for Alana at Viator!
I had an amazing solo day trip to Nanjing! My tour manager, Alana gave me detailed information on how to find my way to the train at the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. She was very helpful and communicative, which greatly alleviated my fears about traveling on my own by bullet train on my very first day in China. My tour guide, Emily met me at the station and explained to me about the places we were going to visit. Although it was a cold and rainy day, we went first to Zhonghua Gate and later to the Confucius temple and surrounding area, which was beautifully decorated for the lantern festival. After lunch, we went to the Memorial for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre which I had specifically requested. We spent a good amount of time there, and I could see everything at my own pace without feeling rushed. There wasn’t much time after that, and there was a traffic jam due to rush hour so we decided to head towards the railway station. Emily was an excellent tour guide. Not only was she very knowledgeable about Chinese history, but she was also very patient, kind and considerate with explaining everything and answering all of my questions. She even helped me with little things, like holding my bag while I rummaged through the contents searching for something I needed. Also, when I mentioned that I needed a power bank, she arranged for the driver to buy me one ( which I paid for later) while we were in the memorial. At the end of the day, she accompanied me all the way to the platform to make sure that I was able to board the train, after convincing the security personnel that it was necessary to do so. I was really lucky to have had such a wonderful tour guide. Nanjing is an amazing city with a lot of history. It was the capital city for 10 Chinese dynasties between the 3rd and 20th centuries. It should be on the list of places to visit in China for anyone who is interested in Chinese history. It takes only 1 hour to get there by bullet train from Shanghai and one can buy train tickets in advance online. There are plenty of signs in English at the railway stations and inside the train, and the trains have comfortable seats.
This was an amazing day tour. Francis, our guide was excellent. He had great knowledge of the sites, was fun to talk with, and was extremely flexible and went out of his way to ensure that we had a great time. If you book with this company, ask for Francis. I could not have asked for a better guide today. Also, Alana, our other contact with the tour company is excellent. She was a great communicator and ensured we were set up well. I definitely would recommend Francis, Alana, and this company, again.
I felt a bit overwhelmed about tackling Nanjing during the busy Qingming festival, but Ava, my Nanjing Guide, made everything so easy! She was fantastic – knew all the best routes to avoid the crowds, got me to the front of lines, and even helped me translate to order some delicious local dishes. Highly recommend!
