Leónidas fue un rey de la ciudad-estado griega de Esparta, y el XVII de la línea Agiada, dinastía que pretendía descender del semidios mitológico Heracles y Cadmo. Leónidas era hijo del rey Anaxandridas II. Sucedió en el trono a su medio hermano el rey Cleómenes I en 489 a. C. Leónidas tuvo una notable participación en la Segunda Guerra Persa, donde llevó a las fuerzas griegas aliadas a una última posición en la batalla de las Termópilas (480 a. C.) mientras intentaba defender el paso del ejército persa invasor; murió en la batalla y entró en el mito como el líder de los 300 espartanos. Mientras los griegos perdían esta batalla, pudieron expulsar a los invasores persas en el año siguiente.
Junto al monumento de Leónidas, en las históricas Termópilas, se encuentra el innovador museo del Municipio Lamia, dedicado a la batalla del 480 a. C. que cambió el curso de la historia griega. Un proyecto científico de la Fundación del Mundo Helénico, el Centro de Información Histórica de las Termópilas abrió sus puertas al público en 2010. El edificio, en forma de antigua punta de lanza girada hacia el norte como si estuviera frente a los invasores, se caracteriza por su diseño ergonómico que se aplica a los fines museológicos más actualizados y cuenta con paneles de vidrio que permiten la entrada de mucha luz natural. El Centro representa la historia como narrativa y discurso interactivo: En sus tres salas de exposiciones -llamadas Leonidas, Dienekes y Thermopylae- las aplicaciones multimedia ofrecen al visitante un viaje virtual a la época y los campos de batalla de las Guerras Pérsicas, como relata el historiador antiguo Heródoto, mientras que la batalla misma de las Termópilas cobra vida en una película digital en 3D.
La batalla de las Termópilas se llevó a cabo en 480 a. C. entre los griegos y los persas al mismo tiempo que tuvo lugar la Batalla Naval de Artemision. A principios de septiembre el ejército persa dirigió mi Jerxis llega a los pasillos de las Termópilas. Los griegos han elegido este lugar estratégico para enfrentar el ataque persa. Jerxis ha ordenado a Leónides, el líder del ejército griego que entregue su arsenal, pero él respondió 'Ven y tráelos'. Dos días consecutivos los griegos lucharon heroicamente. Al tercer día Efialtes traiciona a los griegos, mostrando a los persas el pasadizo para llegar a la parte posterior de los griegos. Entonces, el ejército persa rodea a los griegos. Leónides permanece en el lugar de la batalla junto con 300 espartanos, 700 tespieis y 400 Thivaious, leales a sus leyes patrias. Cae muerto por las flechas persas.

Según la mitología, Hefesto, a petición de la diosa Atenea, creó los manantiales para que Hércules pudiera lavarse y recuperar sus fuerzas después de sus labores.

Great experience with our guide, Nikos. He was very knowledgeable and personable. The Thermopylae site is undergoing improvements but completely accessible and apparently easier to navigate than in the past. The experience was incredible and honestly surreal. The museum admission was very affordable, and the trip itself was exactly the right length. The atmosphere there was amazing — you could really feel the history around you. My guide made it even better with how knowledgeable he was about Thermopylae and Greek history overall, while also being super friendly and accommodating. A great experience for those interested on military history. There were two of us in the group and th driver engaged with us sharing his knowledge about Thermopyle and the battles that preceded and followed it. He also described points of interest along the way. The museum is small and fee, which wasn't included was 3 Euros, so no issue, but have the correct amount ready. The lunch stop was a great spot, with amazing views of the Aegean and nearby islands. Excellent for enthusiasts.

It's difficult to review this fairly. Our driver was pleasant, friendly and helpful, and an excellent, safe driver. However, Thermopylae itself is not a good day out. The 'museum' has almost nothing in it bar a 3D film explaining the battle quite well - for an extra EU3 each! The two monuments are impressive, but other than that, there is nothing to see at the battlefield site. The hot springs 'spa' is just a hydrothermal spring and waterfall. As it was the middle of winter we did not bring our swimming gear, but there was plenty of time had we wanted to sit in the hot sulphurous water
