Amazing tour following ANAC history

This was a fantastic day spent following Australian and New Zealand war history exploring the military base location and visiting various spots through the area. Our guide Huong was amazing. So knowledgeable and happy to share information. Huong was very proud to share history to us Australians and even maintained the memorial site herself. If anyone is considering doing this tour I would definitely recommend her and even request her to be your guide.

Long Tan Battle tour

Well organised with a local Long Tan guide who was very knowledgeable on the war history and particularly the ANZAC involvement. You head straight to the Nui Dat base remnants where you see the old air strip and heli pad. You then visit the memorial, Phoc Tuy tunnels, lunch and back to HCMC. Be prepared for a long drive.

Depends on expectations and reason for going

Hard to rate this tour as we had highs and lows. To start with the company ‘forgot’ about our booking and had to quickly arrange for a guide and driver so we didn’t start until 2 hours late. Mistakes happen so we let it go. We had a chatty guide for the drive towards Long Tan and then Trung swapped places with him as the local guide and displayed his impressive knowledge of the area, the war and Australian participation in the war. The area itself is far from what it would have been back during Australian service with the Nui Dat Helipad now a quarry and the runway now being used as a local road. Trung had photos from the campaign for then and now comparisons. Huge rubber plantations are now growing in the area and were interesting to see. For us, the main purpose of the tour was to pay our respects at the Long Tan Memorial and we were able to do so and it made the whole tour absolutely worthwhile. That’s when the adventure began as a sudden downpour left our vehicle bogged in mud in the neighbouring banana plantation so after trying to help get the car out and eventually being rescued by a local farmer we, and our guide were coated in mud and another 2 hours behind schedule. This is probably why we missed the tunnel area that we had also been looking forward to seeing but there was no explanation and we were driven to our traditional lunch. Lunch was a nice assortment of Vietnamese dishes and we had to pay for our own drinks before heading back to Ho Chi Minh City, arriving only 30mins later than we would have had the tour started on schedule which means we missed out on some of our tour time. Not a tour for everyone but if you want to pay your respects and get a feel for what our Diggers went through then you can’t go wrong.

A must do!

My father and I took the private tour from Ho Chi Minh City. We had a prompt pickup from our door step at 8.30 a.m. Our tour guide Field was friendly and was happy to have a chat with us along the way. We then arrived in Ba Ria and changed guides. Quan was our new guide and he was great from the start. Funny, great English and kept us informed about the itinerary. We then visited all the attractions including Nui Dat and Long Phuoc tunnels. The tunnels were incredible and we got to scale about 60 metres worth, that was plenty! Long Tan memorial was the last stop and it was quite surreal. Quan gave us flowers to lay at the site which was a really nice touch. His knowledge of the battle And Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War was very impressive. If you’re Australian or New Zealander or just interested in the Vietnam War history, then this is the tour you want to do. Unforgettable.

Our tour guide was fantastic. She was a sweet young lady who was very knowledgeable. I could not fault her as a tour guide at all.
We were really looking forward to seeing inside the tunnels. Unfortunately they were gate locked. This is no fault of the guide.
It is still very eye opening as to where the Australians were based, in Nui Dat, and the vast area in which they occupied.
