We booked this towards the end of our stay in Madrid, after we had already eaten quite a few tapas dishes. However, it was nevertheless a good experience. Our guide, Maria, was very affable and was put on the spot as neither of us drink alcohol. I don’t think we appreciated that it was actually 3 food dishes and 3 drinks, so this threw her out a bit. We started at the San Anton markets, where we had the best potato frittata we had ever tried, then a reasonable walk for battered cod and cod croquettes, then a short walk for some churros. Maria pointed out some landmarks on the way and answered some of our general questions about Spanish culture and places we wanted to visit. My only recommendation would be to make sure you enter your dietary restrictions (e.g. no alcohol, or other restrictions) in the comments box (the booking form does say to do this….) when you book so that your guide can modify the places and dishes you experience.
This was a wonderful experience. Ask for Ignacio! He was such a great guide and we had such a great time with him. We loved the food and the stories and all the culture that was shared.
Piero was an absolutely fantastic guide for our first activity in Madrid. We covered history, architecture, some Spanish gossip, and of course, food! We visited some known spots and some hidden gems and in the meantime had some fantastic food and drink. If you are visiting Madrid be sure to let Piero show it to you first!
We only had 4 tastings in 3 stops. The four was advertised as 6 tastings. Our tour guide was nice but from Venezuela so she talked a lot more about her history than Spain and Madrid. We wanted a bit more history.
Dear Sherri, We are sorry to hear the tour did not fully deliver on what was promised. Receiving only 4 tastings out of an advertised 6 is something we need to look into and we will be following up with the guide directly. We are glad she made a warm impression, and it is lovely that she brought her own story to the experience. At the same time, a Madrid food tour should keep Madrid at its heart, and we understand why you wanted more of the city's history and culture woven in. Your feedback is exactly what helps us fine tune the experience and we appreciate you sharing it. Madrid has so much to offer and we hope the city itself won you over. We would love to welcome you back for a tour that truly does it justice. Kind Regards, The Withlocals Team
Elge was excellent very knowledgeable and we really enjoyed the tapas and hearing all about the culture of Madrid.
The food was amazing and the guide, Íñigo de la Serna, was awesome. I’m walking with a cane at the moment and he accommodated my needs perfectly.
Unique and personal experience with lovely local. Got to know our tour guide and talk about real world topics.
Julian was very knowledgeable and informed. He knows a lot about the history of Spanish food. I highly recommend him.
We have done many food tours throughout the US and Europe. The offering was 6 or 10 tastings, private guide. I elected 6 as we have always had lots of food and drink on these tours, expecting 4-6 stops. The tour consisted of only 2 stops-a restaurant and then a block or so away a food market hall. We chose no alcohol, but assumed that we would at least get water or soda, however these had to be purchased at both the stops and were not included. At the mom and pop restaurant we had 3 small potato dishes and 1 pepper dish. At the market place, we had a small cheese plate and 3 small fish servings on bread. We were shocked when that was the conclusion of the tour. We did stop by an interesting church after the food market. This was way way overpriced for the food provided. The guide was nice enough and tried to connect with us It just wasnt much of a tour with 2 stops!
This tour offers very basic, inexpensive tapas (mostly potatoes), with no history or context about Tapas Culture in Madrid. The tour guide is nice, but the tour was a cultural disappointment. Save your money and go buy some elegant tapas on your own.
