Eran ricos y bien educados, médicos, comerciantes, armadores, pero ciudadanos de segunda clase al mismo tiempo. Fundaron una sinagoga en la rígida ciudad romana-católica, hoy en día una de las más antiguas de Europa, donde exhiben con orgullo su propia herencia en el primer museo judío que se abrió en esta región. La atención se centra en el paradero de la comunidad judía en el casco antiguo de Dubrovnik, desde el siglo XIV hasta hoy. Desde la fuente judía en la meseta de Pile, sobre fragmentos de piedra en la parte norte de la ciudad hasta la calle judía donde se formó un gueto en el siglo XVI, evoca la vida de los judíos en Dubrovnik. El abandono de la religión y la nacionalidad marcó una historia más reciente del antiguo estado comunista y dejó un impacto en la comunidad judía en Dubrovnik. Hoy en día, solo un pequeño número de judíos vive en la ciudad, pero aún son prominentes, influyentes, educados y exitosos. Guardan con orgullo los restos de sus antepasados.

We had a great tour with Vesna! She was personable, knowledgeable and gave us great context and perspective to understand the history of the Jewish community in Dubrovnik, from even before the Roman era to the present. The visit to the “Jewish street” and the synagogue was especially interesting. The tour was also a great introduction to the overall history of the Old City.
