El río Hooghly al norte de Calcuta tiene una historia convincente. En cuarenta kilómetros, tres naciones europeas construyeron ciudades, iglesias y casas comerciales en las mismas orillas —los Franceses en Chandannagar, los Portugueses en Bandel y los Daneses en Serampore— compitiendo por la influencia sobre la provincia más rica del Imperio Mogol. El Palacio Dupleix es un gran lugar para empezar a hacerse una idea del legado francés de Chandanpur. Hoy en día, el Palacio Dupleix es un museo y se exhiben cañones utilizados en las guerras Carnáticas, artefactos y muebles de los gobernadores generales franceses y muchas otras reliquias.
Visitamos una hermosa mansión que está parcialmente sumergida en el río Hooghly. Patal Bari significa literalmente la casa subterránea. Dos características llamativas de esta mansión son las sombrillas de madera bellamente talladas y las salidas de agua. Durante sus días de apogeo, visitantes importantes de Chandan Nagar solían adornar esta casa, Rabindranath Tagore, el poeta nacional, e Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, por nombrar algunos.
The Strand tiene la mejor colección de edificios coloniales. Lo más destacado de Stand es el Durgacharan Rakshit Ghat, un pabellón increíblemente hermoso adornado con imponentes columnas y deslumbrantes trabajos de estuco construido en honor a Durgacharan, ganador de la Legión de Honor de Francia. Construido en la década de 1920 en honor a Durgacharan Rakshit. El pabellón de aspecto elegante consta de esbeltas columnas con estucos decorativos que consisten en cabezas de elefante y diseños florales.
Esta es una iglesia de dos pisos con torres gemelas y una magnífica estatua de Jesús. Construida en 1884, lo más destacado de esta iglesia son los hermosos vitrales y los relieves de colores de Jesús cargando la cruz en las paredes.
La Iglesia fue construida en 1660 y está dedicada a Nostra Senhora di Rozario, conocida popularmente como Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Las flores de violeta entre las lápidas antiguas añaden un aspecto pintoresco al entorno. La estatua más conmovedora del complejo es la de la Madre de los Dolores en mármol sentada con el cuerpo de Jesús muerto en su regazo. Es un desgarrador
El Rajbari es una gran mansión de la familia Goswami, la más rica en la historia de Serampore. Fueron invitados por el rey de Gaur a establecerse en Bengala y construir un negocio en condiciones muy favorables. Construida en 1820, esta mansión solía ser la residencia más opulenta del barrio.
En el siglo XIX, Serampore era famosa por sus grandes instituciones educativas. William Carey fundó el Serampore College, que fue la primera universidad en Bengala. Samachar Darpan, el primer periódico bengalí, se publicó el 23 de mayo de 1818 en una Baptist Mission Press ubicada aquí.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. My guide was excellent; friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining 😃. I thought I had a reasonable grasp of European history in India but I learnt a lot, without feeling I was on an education tour. All in all a fascinating and enjoyable day 👍
The slice of Europe was a revelation. We had a lovely time exploring the former colonial centres of Serampore, Bandel and Chandannagar. We saw amazing buildings and our guide helped us appreciate the legacy of French, Danish and Portuguese in Bengal. Ab outstanding experience.

I enjoyed the tour. If you are interested in the history of India and Bengal, you can really appreciate it. I was especially interested in "the Danish Tavern." It is also a good opportunity to visit places outside Kolkata and enjoy local food and sweets. The guide has extensive knowledge of Bengal's history and culture. The driver was excellent.
This is not a day trip for everyone. It is truly to the crumbling ruins of a forgotten colonial past. But if you’re the kind of person that nerds out on that stuff, this trip was awesome! Anirban was a great and knowledgeable host, eating lunch with him over his explanation of Bengali culture was a particular highlight. I was extremely glad I took the tour, 5/5 would recommend.

It’s amazing, but it’s for a very specific clientele. If you’re ready to nerd out on the European history of the Hooghly, this tour is absolutely for you. If not, hard pass, you’ll be bored out of you mind. Anirban is an excellent guide, and O really enjoyed his insight on Bengali culture over the included lunch, which was delicious and perfectly spicy.

The guide and driver were very nice and professional. However, there is hardly anything to see. The trip was boring and unexciting. The roads were dirty and congested with no real sight to see. However, that was no fault of the driver or the guide

The slice of Europe is a fascinating tour of colonial Bengal. Our guide Anirban was wonderful and helped us understand the impact of the various European powers on Bengal. There were fascinating monuments designed in European style and we also had a lovely local Bengali lunch. Highly recommened.
