Un sitio del patrimonio mundial de la UNESCO. Shantiniketan significa morada de paz; mucho antes de que se convirtiera en el nombre de un lugar, era el nombre de la casa de huéspedes que Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, padre del poeta Rabindranath Tagore, había construido. Se cree que el padre de Rabindranath se topó con una tierra deshabitada con tierra roja y arrozales mientras viajaba en bote y tomó la decisión de comprar la tierra. La visión de Rabindranath Tagore de establecer una escuela siguiendo las líneas del sistema de gurukul previamente existente (una escuela residencial donde los estudiantes vivían con su maestro/gurú) fue la piedra fundamental de Visva-Bharati. Para hacer realidad esta visión, el ashram fundado por su padre se convirtió en una escuela al aire libre. Cuando Rabindranath Tagore recibió el Premio Nobel y utilizó los fondos recibidos, amplió aún más la escuela y le cambió el nombre de Visva-Vidyalay a Visva-Bharati, que significa comunión del mundo con la India. Fue reconocida como universidad central en 1951.

Shantiniketon was always a dream place for me. Shantiniketon is a name which takes me back to an era of famous cultural importance and heritage. We travelled from Sealdah station by train in an AC compartment and reached Bolpur station after 3 hours. Muzaffar hired a taxi and took us to the most significant places of Shatiniketon. Chatimtala, Visva Bharati University, Rabindra Bhaban, Rabidranath Tagores five houses, Museum, Amarkutir, Srijani Shilpagram, Sonajhuri forest and many other places were in our itinerary. Muzaffar was the perfect tour guide for my friends and I. He impressed us with his knowledge of Kolkatan culture and history. He was generous with his time too, offering to take photos for us, recommending nice places to eat and have coffee, and being flexible with our schedule. I would highly recommend Shantiniketon, with Muzaffar as the tour guide, to any travellers interested in exploring the Kolkata region.
