Tour operator was a no show. Had to call several people to find out that they decided to cancel but didn't bother to notify me. Had to find last minute option elsewhere instead.
We were picked up in Bari and driven to Matera in a nice car. it took an hour to get to Matera. We were then escorted to the center of old Matera and had a very interesting tour of this very unique old town in Southern Italy. The tour in Matera was by a separate tour guide who was very knowledgeable about the town's history.
This tour was essentially a two hour walking guided tour of Matera, with a drive to and from Bari (an hour each way). The guided tour of the old town with Gaetano was excellent - lots of information and insight into the history and culture of Matera and its inhabitants. The drive was fine - but nothing really to see. We’d been unable to figure out how to get to / from Bari via bus for a day trip while allowing time for a walking tour; hence the tour that included transport. The overall cost was quite high, but probably similar to getting a taxi each way, and the integrated transport/ tour made things very easy. There was some confusion about pick up location, but it worked out fine.
Our tour guide, Gaetano, spoke excellent English and was both informative and friendly. The duration was just about right in the early September heat. The guide led us thru the history and architecture of the area. We were led, at the end, to a piazza that was a blend of the old city and new. The one big negative was that Viator's information for pickup in Bari was just WRONG. Luckily the tour provider contacted us and gave us correct information. Check directly with your tour provider (not Viator) if you are being picked up in any city other than Matera.
This day trip was very interesting and fun! Stefano is organized and knows his history. He is passionate about puglia region and each town we visited.
Excellent travel arrangements with a very friendly driver and a very good guide telling us the history and taking us around the sights of Matera. Everything was great
Gaetano who was from Matera was an excellent tour guide providing insights into the history of the city as well as a light touch. Very good English as well
Matera has a fascinating history. Our guide Barbara was very knowledgeable and explained many aspects about it.
This was a fantastic tour. We were picked up in Bari by Domenico who had great communication and directions for pick up. Domenico drove us and then walked us to our guide Renato whose family use to live in Matera. Their insight and connection to thus beautiful town was amazing! Domenico then drove us back to Bari. Such a great team.
I stayed in the non-historic part of the city, behind the train station, one thing I noticed is that the sidewalks are not level, and some are very narrow, horrible for people with limited walking. You need to be careful not to fall
