Adadi Mariam / Estela de Tiya Mariam Adadi Adadi Mariam es una iglesia subterránea excavada en la roca similar a las de Lalibela. Esta iglesia es única ya que es la iglesia más al sur de su tipo y está sola; no hay otras iglesias excavadas en la roca en el área. Se ha supuesto que el rey Lalibela ordenó la construcción de Adadi Mariam para su visita al sur de Etiopía. El sitio data del siglo XIII, pero sigue siendo un lugar de culto activo. Si bien data aproximadamente de la misma época que las estelas de Tiya, y está a sólo unos 30 km al norte de ellas, Adadi Mariam ofrece un fuerte contraste con el aura pagana de Tiya.
Estela de Tiya Cerca de la iglesia Adadi Mariam se encuentran las estelas de Tiya. Los monumentos (36 en total) son restos de una antigua cultura etíope y miden entre 1 y 2 metros de altura. Las excavaciones han revelado que el sitio es un antiguo cementerio que alberga los restos de hombres y mujeres, de entre 18 y 30 años. Las estelas, que datan de entre los siglos X y XV, están cubiertas de símbolos cuyo significado aún se desconoce. Las espadas y otros símbolos tallados en la roca son únicos en sí mismos; no se han descubierto otros símbolos de este tipo. Se puede acceder fácilmente a Tiya desde una carretera principal desde Addis Abeba. Ha sido nombrado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO y está relativamente intacto por el turismo en comparación con otras partes de Etiopía. A última hora de la tarde, viaje de regreso a Addis.
En el sitio arqueológico Melka Kunture tenemos la oportunidad de ver fósiles descubiertos (de casi 2 millones de años de antigüedad) de la edad prehistórica. La piedra de la zona tiene una antigüedad de 1:5 millones de años.

Amazing tour. Ashu is such a great guide, very knowledgeable and with such a positive attitude. Nothing was ever too much and he took the time to explain things to us. We felt very safe the whole time and count ourselves very lucky to have seen such amazing sites that not a lot of people get to see. We saw an ancient rock hewn church and a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage archeological site finished up by a tasting of some local brew - an experience in itself.
