Theresienstadt, el campo de concentración, también conocido como Theresienstadt Ghetto, fue establecido por las SS durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial en la fortaleza y guarnición de Terezín. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial sirvió como un campo de concentración nazi atendida por guardias nazis alemanes. Miles de personas murieron allí, algunas murieron directamente y otras murieron por desnutrición y enfermedades. Más de 150,000 personas (incluyendo miles de niños) estuvieron detenidas allí durante meses o años, antes de ser enviadas por transportes ferroviarios a su muerte en los campos de exterminio de Treblinka y Auschwitz en la Polonia ocupada, así como a campamentos más pequeños en otras partes. Originalmente fue construido para convertirse en una fortaleza orgullosa e inexpugnable rodeada de muros y protegida por un sofisticado sistema de trincheras de inundación. Construida en 11 años a finales del siglo XVIII, esta fortaleza, cuya primera piedra angular fue colocada por el emperador José II, y la ciudad que lleva el nombre de su madre, la emperatriz María Teresa, nunca protegió nada de nadie al final. convertirse en una enorme cárcel. Primero se convirtió en una cárcel a mediados del siglo XIX. Su prisionero más famoso fue Gavrilo Princip, quien disparó el primer tiro en Sarajevo e inició la Primera Guerra Mundial antes de ser traído aquí en 1914. Sin embargo, el destino de esta ciudad se cumplió durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En 1940 la Pequeña Fortaleza de Terezín se convirtió en una prisión de la Gestapo de Praga, a la que fueron enviados especialmente los presos políticos. Solo un año después, toda la ciudad se convirtió en un campo colectivo y de paso para judíos.
El Cementerio Nacional fue creado artificialmente después de la liberación en 1945. El estímulo para su creación provino de los ex prisioneros y los herederos de los fallecidos, a cuya solicitud se exhumaron restos físicos de seis fosas comunes en las murallas de la Pequeña Fortaleza que había sido en uso desde el 1 de marzo al 7 de mayo de 1945. Entre los que fueron exhumados había prisioneros de la marcha de la muerte que en mayo de 1945 llegaron a la Pequeña Fortaleza.
El Ghetto de Terezín fue inaugurado en la ex escuela municipal en 1991. De esta manera, se gestionaron los esfuerzos por una conmemoración digna de las víctimas del Gueto y una correcta explicación de su historia, tareas que enfrentan no solo los empleados del Memorial Terezín junto con los ex internos sino también otros representantes de la vida pública del país, finalmente se materializan después de más de cuarenta años. La recién concebida exposición permanente del Museo titulada "Terezín en la 'Solución final de la cuestión judía' 1941 - 1945" fue inaugurada en 2001. También podemos encontrar aquí un Salón Conmemorativo de los Niños del Gueto de Terezín, dedicado a sus víctimas más jóvenes, más un selección de los dibujos mundialmente famosos realizados por niños del Ghetto, una maqueta del Ghetto con un sistema de orientación electrónico que muestra sus unidades temáticas individuales y con información relevante para los visitantes, para la sala de lectura local y el cine donde se proyectan los documentales. .
La pequeña sala de oración judía se fundó durante el período del gueto y servía para las necesidades espirituales de los prisioneros que se alojaban en las casas vecinas. Propiedad de František Bubák, el espacio sirvió como parte de una funeraria antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Aunque se vio obligado a abandonar Terezín durante 1942, Bubák recuperó la propiedad después de la guerra. Debido a que su familia temía las repercusiones del régimen comunista, mantuvieron en secreto la existencia de la sala de oración mientras la usaban como almacén. Los descendientes de Bubák no lo notificaron a las autoridades hasta después de la Revolución de Terciopelo de 1989 que llevó la democracia a lo que entonces era Checoslovaquia. A los visitantes se les ha permitido ver la habitación desde finales de la década de 1990.
El gobierno local del gueto judío tenía su sede en el antiguo edificio Magdeburg Barracks. Oficialmente se ocupaba de los asuntos internos del gueto, aunque todos los asuntos importantes estaban totalmente bajo el control del mando del campo SS. Inaugurado en 1997 después de renovaciones, el cuartel de Magdeburg cuenta hoy en día con una réplica del cuartel de la prisión del período del gueto y otros elementos, aunque su función principal es la de sede de una exposición sobre la vida artística y cultural del gueto. El crematorio del cementerio judío de Terezín fue construido por prisioneros del gueto por orden de los comandantes de las SS. Su funcionamiento se inició a principios de octubre de 1942. La parte central de la instalación comprendía cuatro incineradores de petróleo suministrados por Ignis Hüttenbau de Teplice-Šanov. La sección frontal sirvió como espacio para descargar los cadáveres de los ataúdes. Por un lado limitaba con la sala de autopsias, por el otro había un anexo que albergaba a los guardias formados por policías checos y presos que trabajaban en el crematorio. En el momento de mayor tasa de mortalidad, había hasta dieciocho trabajadores presos que rotaban en turnos permanentes. Siempre que la tasa de mortalidad bajó, el número de trabajadores disminuyó a cuatro. El crematorio fue supervisado por SS-Scharführer Heindl, uno de los principales oficiales más temidos del campo, pero los comandantes del campo también llevaron a cabo controles de rutina.

Terezin/Theresienstadt was a significant destination I had long thought about visiting, but never had the chance to over the many years I had been living as an expat in the Czech lands during the mid-aughties. Upon my recent return to Prague, I decided to it was time to finally take the plunge and get over my childish trepidations about visiting this site of abject human evil, where the carnage of more than 35,000+ precious souls lost their lives at the hands of the rapacious Nazi regime in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. I could think of no better "sherpa" to accompany me through Terezin's hallowed grounds than Miss Eva herself. In my experience, the only way to truly see Terezin is via a private guide. Diving into this place along with a large gaggle of people from all across the face of The Big Blue Ball -- gawking, squawking, and taking endless photos for their socials -- somehow cheapens the entire holy process, stealing away from the required emotions you need to undergo to fully take in the immensity of what you're about to experience. It needs to be done sotto voce, with an expert and done correctly. Between its Little Fortress, the Terezin Ghetto (the town, in other words), the horrors of the four crematoria and the adjacent (aghast!) autopsy rooms, along with the various museums in town which painstakingly describe the baleful tragic backstory of this Northern Bohemian town, your emotions will fluctuate from fascination to astonishment to downright tragedy. You not only need a guide to show you the sites, but a professional to introduce you to these various venues, unfurling them delicately with tact, easing you into the Terezin story and perhaps potentially helping you exit it on the other side, a kind of "guide therapy" which Miss Eva is only too happy to assist with. If you feel like going the extra mile, consider taking a private shuttle to Terezin from your Prague hotel -- it gives you the requisite time to ponder -- in conjunction with your savvy-as guide -- what you're about to undergo. Make sure to discuss some of the relevant history surrounding the establishment of the Ghetto, and how and why (almost primarily and exclusively) Jews and various other prisoners: both political and military, were dispatched to this forlorn town at the nexus of two major river systems established by the Austrian Crown to defend against Prussian militarism (which, ironically, ended up happening during the Nazi era, as bad luck would have it). I fully recommend Miss Eva's services: she's fun, very knowledgeable, fully bilingual (Czech/English). I only wish I had more time on this trip so Miss Eva and I could partake of at least two more sites in and around Prague...but that, alas, is, as they say, for the next time. I don't even know where to begin! Eva was an outstanding tour guide - I can't imagine that there's anyone better our there! We went to Terezin Former Concentration Camp on a private tour and she took us to so many different places. While we were on a Viking cruise, we had cancelled our tour through them in order to join Eva and spend as much time as we wanted at the various places we visited - and I'm so glad we did. When visiting with fellow cruisers at dinner, we discovered that they didn't have as rich an experience as we did, saying they wished they had gone with us. Eva has so much incredible knowledge and was so comfortable sharing it with us and answering all the various questions we had. A real highlight of the tour was when we visited the river where the ashes of over 20,000 who had died in the concentration camp were dumped as the war was beginning to come to an end. It was just so beautiful and peaceful, in sharp contrast to the concentration camp itself and was the perfect place to reflect and pray. The visit at the crematorium was especially sobering, but, I feel, was a real reminder (as if we needed one) of what a horrible time that was for the world. At the end of the tour, I felt that Eva was no longer just a tour guide - she had become a friend as well. My advice - don't hesitate! Booking any tour with Eva will be a blessing and an experience you will never forget!

If you're visiting Prague then my advice is to take a day and go to bear witness to the horrors and resilience of humanity at the Terezin concentration camp complex. I hired a car in Prague as I didn't want to be tied to a tour. I wanted to take my time at each of the various sites. The site itself is very large and be prepared to walk a fair bit. I won't say much about the complex itself. You can read about it and I suggest that you do read the history of the complex and the atrocities committed there prior to visiting. It's an emotional experience but I feel an extremely important one. Especially in a period when far-right ideologies are on the rise again. Go. Think. Reflect. I won't say enjoy as that's not the right word. Experience. Bear witness.
