Descripción
Camine entre Mitla, una ruina mixteca-zapoteca destacada por la mampostería geométrica bien conservada y detallada. Aprende de primera mano por qué el nombre Mitla proviene de la palabra náhuatl Mictlan - el lugar del inframundo. Mitla, un antiguo centro ceremonial, incluye dos tumbas en forma de cruz, un paseo de fuertes columnas de piedra y un conjunto elevado de habitaciones ornamentadas que una vez ocupó el sumo sacerdote zapoteco para que aprendas y explores. Al salir, contempla un hermoso jardín de cactus que crece en el parque arqueológico. En las puertas de las ruinas, compre en el mercado de artesanía local que alberga productos de arte popular.

Taken in its own right, this would be a very interesting place to visit. Unfortunately if you've already visited other archaeological sites in the province, this one doen't quite compare for variety and quality. There's a fair amount to see, but the site is not huge. There's general one way walk down through the site system in place. You enter at the top gate and leave at the bottom gate, which is where all the souvenir stalls and hawkers are.

We visited Mitla a few days after taking a half day tour to Monte Alban. I debated at first whether or not it was worth dragging our teenagers to another ruin but it was quite different. We'd learned a lot from our first tour so we felt like we had some idea of context. We all enjoyed it and it was a nice compliment to Monte Alban.
