The Dazu rock carvings are absolutely worth visiting and exceeded all expectations - one of the most beautiful sites I've visited anywhere, and certainly the most historic and atmospheric we visited in China. Isa was an incredible and inspiring guide, but also fantastic company - we enjoyed our long conversations about contemporary China on the drive as much as the specific historical and cultural information she shared at the rock carvings site. Really recommend her and will get in touch again should we find ourselves in Chongqing.
My visit to the Dazu Rock Carvings ended up being one of the absolute highlights of my trip to China, and that was honestly thanks to our guide, Isa. The weather wasn’t on our side that day, but she made everything feel smooth, interesting, and genuinely enjoyable from the moment we arrived. We explored both the Baoding Mountain and North Mountain areas, and each one had its own characteristic. The carvings themselves are incredible - centuries old, unbelievably detailed, and full of stories that you wouldn’t necessarily catch just by looking. On their own, they’re already impressive, but Isa made them feel completely different. She didn’t just give dates and facts; she told the stories behind each carving, pointed out little details, and helped me understand the symbolism in a way that felt just really engaging. One part that really stayed with me was her explanation of the depictions of the Eighteen Hells in Chinese Buddhist tradition. I’d seen images of them before, but hearing her walk through each scene - what it represented, why it mattered - made the whole thing so much more vivid. I still remember the example about the punishment for people who abused alcohol in life, because she explained it in such a clear and almost visual way. It suddenly made these ancient beliefs about karma, consequences, and morality feel very real. If you’re going to Chongqing, I’d say the Dazu Rock Carvings are a must-see. And to truly appreciate their depth and beauty, I wholeheartedly recommend Isa as your guide. She turned an already impressive site into a day I won’t forget. Thank you, Isa, for making this visit so meaningful and memorable.
