History tour

It was a good history of San Fran and Chinatown. The tea tasting at the end was cool. You don’t go into the fortune cookie factory but you get to try the cookies.

Respuesta del operador

Thank you for joining us! I’m glad you enjoyed the history and the tea tasting. We normally do go inside the fortune cookie factory, but unfortunately there was an unusually long line that day, so your guide made the decision to keep the tour moving rather than have everyone spend a lot of time waiting. I’m sorry you missed getting to go inside, but I’m glad you still got to try the fortune cookies. Thank you for spending part of your time in Chinatown with us!

History & food

The history portion could have been balanced more with the sites that were visited. I tend to tune out when a classroom presentation is given when the richness of the environment is ignored. The food choices were well thought out.

Respuesta del operador

Thank you for sharing this. I’m glad you enjoyed the food choices, but I appreciate your comments about the history portion of the tour. Chinatown has so much history right in front of you—in its streets, buildings, alleyways, temples, and businesses—and that should be part of how the story is told, rather than ever feeling like a classroom presentation. Your comments are helpful, and I’ll be sharing them with our guides. Thank you for joining us and for taking the time to give us your perspective.

A great time in Chinatown.

Cynthia was a great tour guide! We enjoyed our time. The food was great, and the tea tasting was amazing.

The tea tasting is one of my favorite parts of the tour too—it’s such a fun way to experience a little more of Chinatown beyond just the food. Brian was the best and he brought Chinatown to Life

Let me start by saying we loved Brian. He was quickwitted well informed and willing to answer off topic questions. The restaurants we went to were wonderful and the staff at each of the restaurants were more than kind. If you get a chance, book this tour and if you wanna have a great time, ask for Brian.

Respuesta del operador

What a great review to read! Brian really does love Chinatown, and I think that comes through when you’re out there with him. I’m glad you threw some off-topic questions his way too — that’s usually when you get some of the best stories! And thank you for mentioning the restaurants and the people who took care of you along the way. I’ll make sure Brian sees this. He’ll love it!

Fab Funny Filmy Foodie Tour!

Had a wonderful tour with Brian, our hilarious showman and tour guide. I went with my teenage son and this tour is perfect for anyone: friends, solo travellers, couples, families, you name it. Let someone else show you the ropes, lose control of the planning, and eat the most delicious food because the guides know where to take you and you just eat all the delicious food (sweet and savoury) that’s put in front of you! You would never experience Chinatown on your own like this. Highly recommended!!!!

Respuesta del operador

I loved reading this! It sounds like you and your son had such a great time with Brian. And “hilarious showman” may be one of the best descriptions of Brian I’ve heard — I’m definitely going to share that with him! One of the best parts of doing these tours is getting to show people the Chinatown we know and love, especially the little places you probably would have walked right past on your own. I’m so glad you trusted us to lead the way, feed you well, and let you just enjoy the afternoon together. Thank you for coming along with us and for such a fun review!

Eating and learning with Roam Local in Chinatown

This was a great experience. I wanted to visit Chinatown but didn't want to just wander around. This was a perfect mix of food tasting and education. It was obvious from the beginning that Ryan knew what he was talking about and was enthusiastic about sharing that knowledge. He did it in a way that was respectful of the culture of Chinatown and gave us the opportunity to be respectful, too. The food was delicious and just the right amount and variety. This was my first food tour and I was concerned about being full before the end. There was no need to worry. From the 1st taste (a sesame ball) to the last (egg tart) I enjoyed tasting everything. I also appreciated the opportunity to support small business owners, including Ryan's. If I am back in San Francisco I know where to go. Be aware that more than one tour starts at the Dragon Gate and pay attention to make sure you get the right tour guide. I didn't know that, but Ryan was kind enough to check to see if I was in the other group instead of leaving without me. I would highly recommend this tour.

Respuesta del operador

What a wonderful review to read. I especially appreciate what you said about Ryan sharing the history and culture of Chinatown in such a respectful way. That is such an important part of what we want our tours to be—not just tasting great food, but helping people really understand the neighborhood and the people and small businesses that make it special. I’m also glad Ryan noticed the mix-up at the Dragon Gate and made sure you ended up with the right group! With several tours meeting there, it can definitely get confusing. And I loved hearing that this was your first food tour and that the amount and variety of food turned out to be just right. From that first sesame ball to the egg tart at the end, it sounds like Ryan gave you exactly the Chinatown experience we hope our guests will have. Thank you for choosing to spend part of your time in San Francisco with us, and especially for supporting a small local business. We’d love to have you join us again the next time you’re in the city!

Absolutely enjoyed it

Just finished an incredible Chinatown food tour in San Francisco with our guide, Brian, and it was one of the highlights of the trip! Great food, fascinating history, and hidden spots we never would have found on our own. Brian’s knowledge and personality made the experience even better. If you’re visiting San Francisco, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary!

Do not miss this tour

Don’t miss. It was perfect, fun, and informative. Nothing touristy about it..:I used to live in SF and loved my city even more after this. My two English friends though it was “brilliant.”

Respuesta del operador

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this! Hearing that someone who used to live in San Francisco came away loving the city even more really means a lot to us. That's exactly what we hope to do—help people see a different side of Chinatown beyond the usual tourist experience. We're also happy to hear your English friends thought it was "brilliant!" We hope the memories of exploring the neighborhood together stay with all of you for a long time. Thanks again for joining us, and we hope to see you back in San Francisco on another tour someday!
