Roccaporena es una aldea del municipio de Cascia (del que dista unos 6 kilómetros), situada a más de 700 metros de altura y situada en un espléndido entorno natural. Desde hace años es destino de peregrinación, ya que aquí nació Santa Rita en 1381, cuya vida y obra se celebran aquí en muchos lugares y de muy diversas maneras. Aquí podrás conocer la casa donde nació, la iglesia donde se casó, la peña de Santa Rita, el lugar donde oraba.
Visitando la Basílica y el Monasterio de Santa Rita de Cascia, Santa Rita fue uno de los santos más populares de la Iglesia Católica, con sus símbolos relacionados como rosas e higos. La basílica fue construida en 1937 y consagrada en 1947, y el monasterio donde vivió durante cuarenta años fue reconstruido en el siglo XVIII y alberga a las monjas de la comunidad agustina.
Importante centro fortificado de los umbros, fue colonia romana y luego municipio (90 a. C.). Después de la caída del Imperio Romano fue guarnecida primero por Teodorico, rey de los visigodos, y luego por el bizantino Belisario. Conquistada por Totila, fue reconstruida por los bizantinos Narses. En la Alta Edad Media fue la capital del Ducado Lombardo. En 1155 fue conquistada y destruida por Federico Barbarroja y, tras una serie de luchas entre güelfos y gibelinos, fue reconquistada por el cardenal Albornoz que la aseguró para la Iglesia y la convirtió en un importante centro del Estado Pontificio. El principal monumento de la ciudad es la Catedral. Construida en estilo románico en el siglo XII, la fachada está adornada con un gran mosaico de estilo bizantino (1207). En el interior hay un fresco con la Virgen y los Santos de Pinturicchio, el busto de bronce de Urbano VIII de Bernini y un extraordinario ciclo de frescos de Filippo Lippi.
Rocca Alborziana una fortaleza medieval, ubicada en la cima de la colina de Sant'Elia con vistas a la ciudad de Spoleto. Es el principal bastión del sistema de fortificaciones construido por el Papa Inocencio VI, para fortalecer militarmente la autoridad de la Iglesia en los territorios del centro de Italia y hacerla más clara, en vista del ahora inminente regreso de la sede papal a Roma después de los años setenta de estancia en Aviñón.
El Duomo es el monumento más importante de la ciudad. Construida en estilo románico en el siglo XII, la fachada está adornada con un gran mosaico de estilo bizantino (1207): en el interior hay un fresco con la Virgen y los Santos de Pinturicchio, el busto de bronce de Urbano VIII de Bernini y un extraordinario ciclo de frescos de Filippo Lippi. La iglesia de Sant'Eufemia data del siglo XII, un interesante edificio románico cuyo ábside domina la escalera que conduce a la Piazza Duomo, la iglesia de Santi Giovanni e Paolo y la abadía de San Ponziano, mientras que la iglesia de San Ponziano data del siglo XII. hasta el siglo XIII. Domenico, la iglesia de San Nicolò y el Ayuntamiento. De gran interés son la iglesia de San Paolo inter vineas (siglo X), con un importante ciclo de frescos del siglo XII, y la iglesia de San Pietro, cuyos orígenes se remontan al siglo V, con una espléndida fachada románica esculpida con extraordinarios bajorrelieves.
El Teatro Romano fue construido en la segunda mitad del siglo I a.C. inmediatamente dentro de las murallas de la ciudad y permaneció en uso hasta el siglo IV. En la época romana se abrió una profunda grieta en los escalones, quizás debido a un terremoto. Durante la Alta Edad Media se construyeron en el lugar la iglesia de S. Agata y el palacio de la familia Corvi. En 1320, cuatrocientos güelfos fueron encerrados y después de dos años asesinados en los pasillos del teatro, utilizado como prisión. En 1395 las monjas benedictinas se instalaron en el Palacio Corvi y el teatro, hoy subterráneo, se convirtió en el claustro del monasterio.
Spoleto, la ciudad medieval, se conserva bien hasta hoy. Admire las ruinas intactas de las puertas romanas que rodean la ciudad. Porta San Pietro o Porta Monterone, al final de la calle del mismo nombre, aún bien conservada, tiene un doble arco y está adornada con cuatro altorrelieves, los escudos de la ciudad.

This was a tour of a lifetime! I have always had a devotion to St Rita, and to be able to witness where she lived, was married, prayed, and died was incredibly emotional. Elizabeth was the BEST tour guide you could ask for, and Artu was a superb driver. I was solo so Elizabeth tailored the tour to my needs. She was incredibly knowledgeable and taught me so much about the area and St Rita’s life. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I would not hesitate to take this tour. It’s long and windy road and needs more energetic people to lead it . The lady was nice but she couldn’t walk because of knee issues
