Day out in Brunei

Great day out overall. Got picked up 7.15 a few minutes late which always panics me when abroad as I’m English and prompt. No worries though as our driver and vehicle were both great , car very comfortable. Over the border and an extra stop to start the day as we spotted some monkeys at the side of the road. Then it was oil monument and a far off view of some rigs that the guide seemed very proud of. Next was a posh but empty hotel that reminded me of ceasers palace on the strip. Mosque next built in the nineties, not a patch on any European catherdeal built hundreds of years before though. Then the best bit in the history museum, not sure why we were bare footed and the flor was very cold. The guide was very informative and interesting. Next was a veggie lunch that offered water but we had to buy own cola. The trip was £100 each so I drink wouldn’t have hurt. Lunch was good but a meat option would be better. We then went over and back across a 35km bridge but at this point we all fell asleep so wasn’t sure on the point of it. Then a floating village photo stop and the palace. Back home after 11 hours. Quite pricy but worth it overall. Oh yeah our eagle eyed driver spotted a hornbill on the way back for a photo op

Bad experience.

I've done quite a few tours with Viator, this would have to be the worst, followed by the one I took following day. Started with pick up at hotel to see the "guides" young so in front passenger seat. Well actually started day before whe the company sent me a message saying guide had asked if I could swap days with other tour. I was unable to do this due to prior commitment so they told guide to leave as is. This was followed by several direct messages from guide again asking me to swap days. Once in the car I felt like an extra on a father son day out, guide hardly paid me attention walking with his son at every stop, rushing each stop as he kept complaint we need to get back to boarder as early as possible. Lunch was at a vegetarian restaurant which I didn't like. He had a friend meet him there for lunch as well, they spoke to each other in their language so I felt very alone. At the water village we very quickly walked through sat for 2 mins on a seat then raced back to car. At the end of a very rushed tour of Brunei, he sped sometimes at 160kms overtaking rather dangerously at times. The son even joined me in the back, I don't mind kids but found this annoying having to talk to him rather than having a guide talk to me. When we got to boarder the guide complained how long the cue was and our lane was moving slow, (several times) I felt like I was an in convenience to him. We then continued to speed all the way back to hotel, even in a really bumpy road which was quite uncomfortable. Alot more I could say about hiw awkward I felt and how unprofessional the day was. Felt I didn't really get to relax and enjoy the tour.

As we have mentioned to you earlier, Saturday(weekend) border will be very jam. If we are coming back too late after certain hours we might caught in jam maybe up to 4 to 5 hrs unnecessaries and we might not even able to be cross border in time and this border is not operating for 24 hrs. We are asking you to swap for a good reason but since you cant swap due to your own commitment then we still proceed and i have even told you we need to come back earlier and you had agreed upon. At the water village, you are afraid of walking at the wooden plank walk and weather is very hot and yourself also agreed not to proceed further so we just have a rest in the jetty and this is what you agreed on to leave earlier. If you still need to proceed, you shall had informed me and not agreed to leave earlier further more we are there for more than 10 minutes and not 2 minutes as you mentioned. During lunch, me and my friend only speak in English and not our own language and he joined in for lunch only for a short while and we did talked to you throughout the lunch as well and not as you have mentioned you are alone. i still dont understand why you can twisted the facts. Vegetarian lunch also you told me you like it and now you mentioned the opposite way. Why? I never complain how long the queue was and i just told you if we are back later the queue will be much longer, that's all. You yourself already experienced how bad is the queue. We are queuing for 1km and duration of the queue was an hour. i even told you the worst queue ever encounter is 7 to 8 hours during festive season. For the bumpy ride, the road from border back to Emart was eneven. That time the car speed was merely 60km/h and not i drive 160 km/h and make you uncomfortable. That stretch of the road is bad no matter how fast or slow you drive it's still bumped. Hope you dont twisted all the facts and simply made a irresponsible review.

Marble, gold leaf and declining oil supplies

Brunei invokes some mixed feelings about how a country’s wealth should be used but our day in Brunei was certainly fascinating. Our guide, Joanne, was excellent and provide interesting insights into life in Brunei.
