La estación de tren de Egmore tiene más de 100 años y es uno de los primeros edificios construidos en estilo indo-sarraceno. Diseñada por el legendario Henry Irwin para ser más grande que la estación Charring Cross de Londres, la estación fue construida por Samynatha Pillai. El edificio es una fina mezcla de estilos de diseño gótico y dravídico. Es el lugar ideal para iniciar nuestro paseo por la Arquitectura Británica en Chennai.
La estación central de trenes fue construida en 1873 en estilo gótico renacentista por el arquitecto británico George Harding. Fue modificado por Robert Chisholm, quien agregó la torre del reloj central y las tapas de Travancore en las torres principales. Hoy, esta estación maneja a más de 350000 pasajeros todos los días.
Victoria Public Hall se abrió al público en 1887 para conmemorar el Jubileo de Oro de la Reina Victoria. La sala, que lleva el nombre de la propia reina, había sido sede de varios eventos como reuniones públicas e incluso proyecciones de películas. La sala fue diseñada por el arquitecto británico Robert Chisholm y es un excelente ejemplo de arquitectura indo-sarracena. Namberumal Chetty, que para entonces había construido varias estructuras públicas en la ciudad de Madrás, construyó la estructura.
British Architecture Walk continúa hasta el Edificio Ripon, que fue comisionado en 1913. Diseñado por G.S.T. Harris y construido por Loganatha Mudaliar, el edificio Ripon lleva el nombre de Lord Ripon, un gobernador general de la India británica que fue famoso por ser el padre del gobierno local en Chennai. Hoy este edificio es la oficina del alcalde de Chennai.
Luego caminamos a la sede de Southern Railways en India. Construido en estilo indo-sarraceno, este edificio fue diseñado por N. Grayson y construido por Samynada Pillai. Se completó en el año 1921. La sede central de Southern Railway fue uno de los primeros edificios de la India en construirse con hormigón armado.
Napier Bridge fue construido en 1869 a través del río Coovum y lleva el nombre del gobernador británico de Fort St George, Francis Napier. Conecta el puerto deportivo con el fuerte St George. El estrecho puente se amplió y se convirtió en una estructura de hormigón y se abrió al público en general en julio de 1943. ¡Este puente es utilizado a menudo por los medios de comunicación para representar la ciudad de Chennai!
La Cámara del Senado es el centro administrativo de la Universidad de Madras. Está situado a lo largo de la playa Marina. Construido por Robert Chisholm, el edificio del Senado se considera un gran ejemplo del estilo indo-sarraceno con una combinación armoniosa de características arquitectónicas bizantinas. Esta obra maestra fue construida entre abril de 1874 y 1879. Cuenta con una sala de convocatoria, pórticos, un parapeto, salas de reuniones y una biblioteca.
El Victory War Memorial, anteriormente llamado arco de Cupido, es un monumento construido para conmemorar la victoria de los ejércitos aliados durante la Primera Guerra Mundial (1914-1918). Más tarde se convirtió en el monumento conmemorativo de la victoria de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939–1945), erigido en la memoria de aquellos de la presidencia de Madrás que perdieron la vida en las guerras.

Hareesh was flexible with the timing of the trip. He even took us on the suburban train. A significant area of improvement is to expand the knowledge of British architecture. Must include anecdotes to make it more interesting. We did not visit the Santhome Basilica which was disappointing.

We had a great time with Hareesh. Learned a lot about the history of Chennai, not just what the Britishers did. Hareesh was very kind when my wife felt a bit ill in the heat. A tour well worth doing.

Jainath was a likeable guide and gave a very good introduction to Chennai. He included some history which was very interesting to me as was the British colonial story behind the buildings
This was an AMAZING tour! It began with a great historical overview of India and understanding of the different groups of people that influenced the cultural landscape. We visited some of the iconic British buildings like the Chennai Rail Station and the Ripon Building. I was very impressed with Hareesh's knowledge and ability to answer my (sometimes obscure) questions. Therr is no guidbook that could offer such a rich and fulfilling experience. This is a "must do" tour epecially if you'reinterested in understanding the rich layers that make up this incredible city.
Jainath was a fabulous guide. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of these buildings and I learned so much from him. This session was a highlight of my visit to Chennai.
My second tour with Hareesh, just as good as the first. He was very knowledgeable about the British architecture of Chennai, explaining about the different styles of the buildings, when they were built and what they are made of etc. Hareesh is very friendly and relaxed. Definitely recommend.
We thoroughly enjoyed our British Architecture walk. Our guide, Hareesh was both interesting and knowledgeable about both the architecture and the history. He was happy to answer our questions on a wide variety of topics. It was great to understand how Chennai had evolved as first, separate settlements and gradually grown into the major city we know today. We would definitely recommend this tour.
Hareesh told me a lot about the history of India and showed me the architecture of George town. His explanation was clear and detailed. Then we went to drink the traditional filter coffee. It was a nice tour. Only caveat is that I would have liked to go more on foot.
Our guide, Mr. Hareesh , was knowledgeable and wonderful to chat with, pointing out the many different buildings in central Chennai where the British left their mark. He was also very responsive to our questions about Chennai history, municipal organization and daily life. Wonderful insight into an interesting city!
A great tour to get deeper into the history of Chennai and understand how the city evolved before and after colonial times. Hareesh was an excellent guide and took time to explain everything and to answer my questions. An added bonus was a visit to George Town and Marina Beach on the way back to my hotel. Plus the chance to ride a local train. Thoroughly interesting and enjoyable tour which I would highly recommend.
