I was excited to visit a zoo in Melbourne. I had enjoyed my visit near Sydney at Symbio and was ready to enjoy seeing more Aussie animals. As an older visitor, the spread out zoo made it hard to get from one exhibit to another. And so many of the animals were difficult to see because they were hiding and napping. But it would be a fun place for young children and there were lots of strollers everywhere while I was there.
My parents, sister, and I had a great day at Melbourne Zoo! It was awesome to see the snow leopards, especially the cubs. My dad and I also really liked the gorillas. The lemur walkthrough is excellent and it was cool to see the platypus! The food and coffee from the cafe by the giraffes were nice. The smell from the giraffes was STRONG though, so we moved further away from the cafe to enjoy our food and drinks. It’s a big zoo, with a good layout. Some animals had several different viewing spots, which was good and not so good. Not so good because sometimes we had to double back past several other habitats to get a different view of the same animal. We found this especially frustrating at the gorillas. We also found ourselves walking between habitats with no animals to look at. I get there’s lots of space, but there’s lots of nothing too. All in all, we enjoyed ourselves. A great zoo with a good variety of animals.
The zoo has a great layout that is easy to follow, with well planned gardens. The map provided suggested which way to enter a path and was easy to follow. Feeding times were provided for some of the animals. We went on a week day, where it was not so busy, except that there were quite a few school groups. The zoo also featured dinosaurs in a Jurassic setting. Food wise, there were a couple of eating locations, with limited gluten free options. If a coeliac, bring your own!
After being hacked and having EFT card suspended by bank due to trying to pay for our car park - great start. Warning the parking meters are hacked. Use cash $2 for 5 hours. Also take your lunch or picnic. A can of coke $6. Paid approx $120 to get in having to use other EFT card (lucky we had another one) we were surprised on how much it had changed since our last visit. The enclosure’s are wonderful however there’s really not that many animals there. No seals, penguins, elephants and lionesses. Disappointing. Only one pigmy Hipo, and mainly one to two of anything else. Dispute all of this we did have a good 2.5 hrs there with warm weather and a slight breeze. First time visitors will love it. But do try the Werribee Zoo too
Amazing experience, easily accessible via public transport from downtown Melbourne. The zoo is very clean, staff are friendly and most importantly — the animals are well looked after. I highly recommend making a stop at the Melbourne Zoo!
Great zoo! Easy to get to and very clean. Many animals to look at the the gift shop is cute (with helpful staff).
Even though it was raining the day we visited we really enjoyed this zoo. We were especially interested in the native Australian animals.
Awesome big Melbourne Zoo!!!
We absolutely loved the time spent there and the helpful staff. we did the reptile experience and the orangutan experience. The people at the reprile trip gave us so much time and went out of their way to engage and inform us of sooo much it was fantastic, the teens were seriusly fascinated by it too. The orangutan trip wasnt worth the money, could hardly see a thing. And the food was gross, old soggy burger really expensive.
Many of the exhibits were open, but the animals were not in view. The platypus for instance, also the otters.
