Great day out. James gave a very thorough briefing on the way to the trail head, bikes were in great condition and the weather and scenery were fabulous. Highly recommended
Our “guide” (Tristan) was wonderful, he was Informative and kind. The description of the experience was lacking lots of information on TripAdvisor. 1. If you are an inexperienced mountain biker (using a real bike and not an ebike), this trip will be challenging. 2. It is 30 km. This is never mentioned. 3. TripAdvisor says this trip is for 8-80 year olds. This just isn’t true, unless you are a prior elite cyclist at 80 yrs old. 4. This is a true mountain bike experience! Never mentioned! If looking for an relaxing, enjoyable experience, just rent a bike and stick to Wanaka Trail/Lake. Views are best there anyway.
Even if you don't speak English, the guide was kind. The course was not smooth and I enjoyed it.
It was a great, no stress day out. E bike hire and transport included. Pick up at down town Wanaka and transported to our starting point at Lake Hawea. Its a Self paced cruisy ride with the E bike taking the effort out of it and the trail easy to follow. The scenery was varied and so beautiful. Take a picnic lunch as there are so many places to stop and enjoy the picturesque serenity. I highly recommend it and would do it again when I next visit.
From the curtesy phone call in the morning till James took our bikes away, the experience was just fantastic. Jame’s briefing on the shuttle ride out to the starting point was useful, informative and smattered with bits of good old Kiwi humour. The e-bikes are brilliant and obviously well maintained and the route is just one jaw dropping scene after another. The trail has only one or two “testing” spots which as James kindly reinforced to us “if in doubt, walk it out!”. Given these made up probably less than a couple of hundred metres of the 30km course, did not diminish the activity in the least. If, like us, you ride a bike on tours around a city once a year, then you’re equipped to handle this course with ease. DO NOT skip the Pembroke Patisserie! You will regret it. Thanks to James and this wonderful adventure, we will be back.
A great trip, well organised and very easy to navigate along with some amazing views along the way. Higly recommend
We used your service not long ago to do the Dunstan trail for 2 reasons one for the trip and the other to evaluate the bikes as we were looking at purchasing. That trip was outstanding and the bikes so good we brought 2 and use them every week here in Hanmer. This visit to Wanaka with a friend, we decided to do the Hawea trip and not bother taking our bikes but use your company again. This proved to be a mistake. When dropped at Hawea we had to set up our own bikes, maybe because we were regular users, but our set up was never checked. On our previous trip this was a big part of the whole process with getting to know the bikes. We did give the bikes a quick check and all seemed "ok". At the quick track briefing another change from our last trip was no meeting up a wee way into the trip, just "call me if there's any issues" this change proved to be significant for us. Halfway along the Lake front we were all having issues with the bikes - Gear jumping - loss of power from the motor assist - suspension faults and one of the bikes had 2 complete power failures where it turned itself off going up some small inclines. As stated, we own 2 of these bikes and use them every week so we know how they should perform. So, we decided to do some serious bike checks, I adjusted all the derailers to get them to at least change without jumping, this worked on 2 of the bikes the one I was using refused to not jump when loaded. The chains were all very, very dry this did not help the gear issues. All the seat knuckle suspension joints appeared locked and refused to rotate as they should, this gave us all a rough ride. The front forks on the bike I had would go down when loaded but would not return unless the front wheel was lifted from the ground, again this made for a jarring ride, the other bikes front forks were similar but not as bad as the bike I was using. The motor assist issues remained and refused to function as they should which resulted us putting the bikes into High assist and using the gears to assist the motor. We were all very grateful the track was relatively flat. We did consider calling for help but the time frames and the lack of any replacement bikes to us meant the day would be a write off (At this point if we had had a meeting like our first trip it may have been resolved) For us the bikes have been poorly maintained and were only a shadow of the bikes when new, a far cry from the vision explained to us during our first use of your company. At the pick-up point we started going thru some of the issues, but I felt we were not taken seriously so we walked away to have a beer and then a hot soak to relieve the joint stress we all had. Again, we own 2 off these bikes and know how good they are but what was supplied for this trip very substandard and poor.
Wow! That is the worst review that we have ever had and I can only apologise for the way that you feel. The entire nzbiketrails team are mortified about how you felt about this experience as we always aim to go above and beyond where we need to. It is just a shame that we didn't have the opportunity to rectify this during the ride and given you the support that you needed on the Trail. At nzbiketrails we pride ourselves on the quality of our bikes, the service that we deliver and doing the right thing. We are passionate about our bikes and our guests having a brilliant time - the experience should have been no different to the experience that you had on Dunstan with us. Our team always carry spare bikes on our trailers and our response time on the Wanaka & Hawea Trails is typically between 10 and 20 minutes to give support where we need to or pick up guests as required - We have a lot more access on the Wanaka Trails than on Lake Dunstan so we can provide more support across the trail if needed. If these issues were happening early in the ride, and you had given our Guest Experience Manager a call on the direct number he gave to you pre-ride, I think this would have been closer to 10 minutes. As I say to the team if we have an issue it is how we react to it that is important. Due to the anonymity of the review if you would like me to give you a call to discuss please drop me your details through at smiles@nzbiketrails.co.nz and I will happily give you a call at your convenience. Once again apologies and we will do as much as possible to learn from this experience. Smiles David
This was one of the best things we’ve done in our journey of the South Island. Our guide, Max, was super helpful and took great care in explaining the trail and how to operate the e-bikes. He even met us a few kms into our journey to make sure we had a handle of the bikes. The scenery was stunning and we came across hidden little gems that we would otherwise not have seen. The e-bikes made the ride easy, while still doing a bit of a workout. The half way stop in Albert Town at the little patisserie for lunch was perfect, and the food delicious! We will be recommending this activity to all our friends.
Tristan our pick up guy was really friendly and informative and the ride with all the different views of water, snow, mountains and colours of the trees etc was spectacular.
What an incredible experience. The views were absolutely breathtaking with diverse sceneries. We absolutely loved this activity. The E bikes made the 30km ride feel like a breeze. Tristan and James were a delight and provided great recommendations for the trip as well as making us comfortable for the ride. Would highly recommended.
