La historia del Taj Mahal se centra en una gran historia de amor y pérdida : el emperador mogol Shah Jahan lo encargó en 1631 como un magnífico mausoleo para su amada esposa, Mumtaz Mahal, que murió dando a luz a su hijo número 14. Construido con mármol blanco e incrustado con piedras preciosas, el complejo tardó unos 22 años (finalizado ~1653) con 20.000 artesanos, convirtiéndose en un pináculo de la arquitectura mogol y en Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO que simboliza el amor eterno. La historia del Fuerte de Agra comenzó antes que los mogoles, pero fue el emperador Akbar quien lo reconstruyó como una fortaleza y capital de piedra arenisca roja alrededor de 1565 - 1573, transformando un fuerte de ladrillo (Badalgarh) en una gran ciudad amurallada y un centro militar. Sucesores como Jahangir y Shah Jahan añadieron exquisitos palacios, mezquitas y salones de mármol blanco (Diwan-i-Khas).
