Itinerary
Kenrokuen is one of Japan’s 3 most beautiful gardens and a highlight of any visit to Kanazawa. The garden is designed for walking, with gently winding paths that lead past ponds, bridges, stone lanterns, and carefully maintained trees. Each season brings a different look, from fresh greenery in spring to snowy scenery in winter, making it enjoyable year-round.
Located beside Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle has long been a symbol of the city. Once home to the powerful Maeda clan, the castle grounds reflect Kanazawa’s importance during the samurai period. Today, visitors can walk through the spacious grounds, see the impressive stone walls, and explore reconstructed buildings that showcase traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Higashi Chaya is one of Kanazawa’s best-preserved historic districts. The area is known for its rows of wooden teahouses that date back to the Edo period, when geisha entertained guests here. Now, many of these buildings have been turned into cafes, sweet shops, and craft shops, making it a pleasant place to stroll and experience the city’s traditional atmosphere.
The Nagamachi Samurai District is a well-preserved area where visitors can experience the atmosphere of a traditional samurai neighborhood. Narrow stone-paved streets, earthen walls, and traditional houses create a setting that feels like stepping back into the Edo period. Visitors can stroll through the historic streets, see beautiful samurai residences, and enjoy small museums, gardens, and local craft shops. The district is especially charming in winter, when the walls are protected with traditional straw coverings called komo-gake, creating a unique seasonal landscape.
Omicho Market is known as the “Kitchen of Kanazawa.” This lively market is filled with local shops selling fresh seafood, seasonal vegetables, and regional specialties. Visitors can enjoy walking through the market, tasting local foods, and experiencing the vibrant atmosphere. Your guide will also take you to hidden spots in the market that are known mainly by locals, where you can discover authentic flavors and unique shops.
