Yala National Park occupies a large space on the South Eastern coast of Sri Lanka, from Okanda to Hambantota. The history of the area extends up to several centuries ago with the area being mentioned as having been abandoned three centuries before due to ‘insalubrious conditions’ according to a 16th century Spanish cartographer Cipriano Sanchez. This may have been due to the swamps and dangerous animals in the region that caused various diseases that were untreatable at the time. Later during the Yala region was made a Forest Reserve under the British Colonial Government in 1900. An area within the reserve was ordained an exclusive game reserve for the resident sportsmen to hunt in. In 1938, the law was passed to ordain Yala as a National Park.

BEYOND TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE

DO NOT BOOK A TOUR WITH YALA NATIONAL PARK. Regrettably, our safari was cancelled due to COVID in early March, which we totally understood. Soon after the cancellation, a member of the Yala National Park booking team was in touch for my bank details to organise a refund (60 US dollars). Again, I was not expecting a refund immediately due to the volume the park must have had to process. However, nearly 6 months down the line, I am STILL waiting for my refund. After querying the process a good 10 times over email, I have received 2 email replies, both reassuring that a refund is on it's way. I do not believe this is the case. I think it is extremely unprofessional to promise your customers a refund if you have no intention.

We saw a leopard

Wonderful wildlife reserve with the best chance of seeing leopards in the wild (though you still have to be very lucky--we were lucky and saw one on both days). Lots of animals including elephants (though they apparently seek water outside the park this time of year so there weren't a ton), water buffalo, deer, and tons of birds. We did 2 half-day safaris from the Block 1 2nd entrance (Katagamuwa). Note that this requires that you pay 2 sets of entrance fees because the entrance fee is per day. Also, the entrance fees shown on the site don't include almost 30% of taxes and other fees. When we went it was during the week and there were still a lot of jeeps that descended upon the leopards but on the weekends we have heard that it gets much more crowded.
