With Edo - The Forgotten Wine Roads of Piedmont · From Turin

Description
I’m Edo. I personally designed this experience, and I’ll be the one hosting you. I’m not a large tour operator, but a local who lives food and wine every day. This small-group wine tour from Turin, intentionally kept intimate with just 4 guests, is ideal for travelers seeking a slow-paced wine experience in Piedmont, away from crowded wineries. Leave the city behind and explore Canavese, a hidden wine area just north of Turin that most visitors, and even many Italians, never see. You’ll visit two family-run wineries, meet the winemakers, and enjoy guided tastings surrounded by vineyard-covered hills and Alpine scenery. The experience highlights two distinctive wines of the area: Erbaluce di Caluso, a crisp, mineral white, and Carema, a rare alpine red made from Nebbiolo grapes grown on steep stone terraces. If you’re looking for a small group wine tour in Piedmont that goes off the beaten path and is led by a passionate local, this experience is for you.

Itinerary
Our journey begins in Turin, heading north to the rolling vineyards of Caluso, where Erbaluce grapes have been cultivated for centuries. At a family-run organic winery, we’ll walk through the vines, learn about the winemaking process, and enjoy a guided tasting of their best labels. For lunch, we’ll sit down to a home-cooked meal, lovingly prepared on the spot by the lady of the winery, featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients that reflect the true flavors of the region.
In the afternoon, we’ll continue to Carema, a village where vineyards grow on dramatic stone terraces built into the mountainside. Here, we’ll take a nice restorative walk through the vineyards that will end up at a historic winery that brings together the work of local growers, preserving centuries-old traditions. After exploring the cellars, we’ll enjoy another tasting, this time featuring the bold, elegant wines that define Carema.

We enjoyed a fabulous day with Edo in Carema and Caluso. A lovely walk through the vineyards and mountain scenery of Carema was followed by tasting some excellent wines at the Cantina Carema - especially the Nebbiolo Carema Riserva. Then it was on to Santa Clelia at Caluso where we were treated to a fabulous home cooked lunch accompanied by a fine selection of white and red wines. Edo was a wonderful guide - knowledgeable, friendly and keen for us to enjoy the best experience. A main attraction of this tour is its difference to the more usual tours in the Langhe area further south. Enjoying the mountain scenery and superb wines of this lesser known area was a real treat - with the added bonus of Edo as our guide. Highly recommend this tour.
10/10 Edo was an incredible host, before and during the actual wine tour. He helped us find good restaurants and must try foods, even before meeting us for the wine tour. He personalized the tour to areas and varietals that aren’t as well known in the region, bringing focus to smaller wineries. He was knowledgeable about the wine, the food and the history of each location. We also had a lovely lunch made by one of the winery owners, and it helped round out the day. He loves what he does, which shines through. He is passionate about food and wine. Even if you don’t do a wine tour, check out his food tours in the city of Turin as well. Thank you for a lovely time, Edo, and sharing your passion with us!
Whenever I visit Italy, I plan at least one day of wine touring. It is one of my favorite ways to explore a new area. When I was getting ready for my first trip to Piemonte, specifically to Turin, I looked for wine tours and found Edo's "Forgotten Wine Roads of Piedmont" tour. I am so glad that I did! Most people doing a tour in Piemonte are going to head straight to Langhe to try Barolos. Edo's tour was something different and literally off the beaten path, and it was FANTASTIC! He took me to two different areas - Caluso, where they make Erbaluce di Caluso, and Carema, where they grow Nebbiolo grapes and do really interesting things with them. Because of the "off the beaten path" nature of this tour, he took me to a smaller family owned farm and a town co-op , very different from the larger wineries these kinds of tours usually visit. Our stop in Caluso was so special. The husband and wife who own the farm we went to served us an incredible meal alongside their delicious wines, that included bubbly, white, red, and dessert wine. And they even sent us out into the vineyard escorted by their dog, Rox, who was an incredible tour guide. 😊 In Carema, we toured the terraced vineyards that are all around the town, and I learned so many interesting things about the particular style of growing they do there. This town is right on the border with the Valle d'Aosta region, and the views of the Alps from the center of town are breathtaking. In this small town, the grapes are primarily brought to the local wine co-op for production. I tasted many interesting wines, but most notable was the sparkling wine made with Nebbiolo grapes. It was a very light rosé, and was truly one of the most delicious wines I have ever had! Edo is a wonderful guide and host. I'm so grateful that he took me to these out of the way areas I otherwise wouldn't know and created a day that was a magical experience. I will enjoy the memories from that day for a very long time!
Edo picked us up. On time. Began explaining tour as soon as we settled in car. Informative, good command of English language, took time to explain details of vineyards, winery, local culture , and local history.
While we did not do this specific tour, Edo was gracious enough to do a custom tour for our family. He spends extra time to ensure where he takes you is comfortable, educational and all around perfect! It’s like going on tour with a personal friend. Thank you Edo!
This is a wonderful way to experience Piemonte wine, cuisine and the beautiful surroundings outside of Torino. We truly enjoyed our time with our host, Edo. He is knowledgeable about the region and his warm personality makes this tour a must do when visiting the area.
I would highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in wine, especially if you want to discover unique local varieties you wouldn’t easily find elsewhere in Italy. I did this tour in November and it ended up being the highlight of my trip to Turin. Instead of the more famous Langhe area, Edo takes you to Canavese, which is a beautiful, mountainous part of Piedmont that most visitors would not be able to discover on their own. The day started with a scenic drive out of the city and a walk through a stunning hillside village and vineyards. We tasted Carema wines from a cooperative winery and learned about the very particular growing conditions of the area, which made the wines completely different from anything I’d tried before. After that we visited a small family-run winery where we tried Erbaluce in several styles, including a fantastic traditional-method sparkling wine and an excellent sweet wine. Lunch there was a real highlight. A homemade meal paired with the wines in a relaxed, welcoming setting. It felt much more like being hosted than being on a standard tour. Edo is a knowledgeable and passionate guide who clearly has strong relationships with the producers he works with. Everything was thoughtfully organized and curated to create a special experience.
This tour through the Canavese region was an incredible experience, and Edo was the reason why. His passion for Piedmont shines through in everything he does, from the way he shares local history to the personal connections he has with the winemakers. Edo made us feel like we were exploring with a friend who genuinely loves showing people his home. We visited two very different wineries: one producing crisp, mineral Erbaluce and another crafting bold Carema wines from dramatic mountain terraces. Edo brought both places to life with great stories and insight, and the whole day felt relaxed, authentic, and far from the usual tourist trail. If you want to experience the real Piedmont, Edo is the guide you want by your side!
This was such an incredible experience. The tour guide Edo is truly passionate about creating a unique experience for his guests. His tour was not your basic tourist trap tour. He carefully selects areas and wineries that are not touristy and truly local. We had a wonderful experience and really enjoyed Edo’s deep knowledge and the wonderful day he planned for us. We really toured the heart of lesser frequented Piedmont wineries and learned so much. All in all, I highly recommend this tour as well as Edo as a tour guide. He is extremely friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about making sure his guests are learning about the culture and having fun!
Edo’s trip to a local owned & a collective owned wineries in the region was well thought out including walking the vineyards! We had an awesome lunch with local flavors & beautiful views. Was Perfecto!!!
