Heart of the Venetian state, the square has always followed the life and customs of the city. The Doge's Palace was the seat of the government and the supreme magistrates of the republic, as well as a prison. Capital executions took place between the two columns of Marco and Teodoro, while the laws and decrees were announced from the Pietra del Bando, then posted on the Porta della Carta. The Basilica was instead the center of state religious ceremonies thanks to the presence of precious relics and its function as a ducal chapel, in a system in which the Doge was head of the Venetian church and reserved the right to appoint bishops. The power and wealth of the church of San Marco were such that it had its own bishop, distinct from that of the city and from the patriarch, the Primicerio, and that special magistrates the Procurators of San Marco administered its patrimony with life, residing in the Procuratie .

Underwhelming experience

The walking tour was ok but the guide was difficult to understand and she did not inquire what we wanted to learn about Venise! The gondola tour was not cool! Supposed to be 30min but lasted 15! The Danieli Gondola staff was rude and our drive was not clear or engaged to give us a minimum experience. Disappointed!!!!!

Operator response

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We’re truly sorry to hear that your walking and gondola tours did not meet your expectations. We understand how disappointing it can be when a guide is difficult to follow or when a gondola ride feels rushed. Unfortunately, in Venice — especially during periods of very high tourist flow — gondola services can sometimes be hurried. However, this should never compromise the quality of your experience, and we apologize sincerely that it did. The shorter-than-promised ride and the attitude of the gondola staff do not reflect the service we aim to deliver. We will be sharing your comments with our partners to prevent this from happening again. As a gesture of our commitment to making it right, we would like to invite you to join us for a completely free tour in any part of Italy of your choice in the future. We truly hope to have the chance to welcome you again and give you the memorable, enjoyable experience you deserve.

We had a wonderful guided tour of Venice with Louisa. She was so knowledgeable and kept a good pace! She made sure we got amazing pictures from great vantage points that only locals know about. We loved our tour!

Our guide Lucía was knowledgable and answered all our questions professionally. She was excellent!

We recommend this tour with a private guide. You see much more and learn much more! She pointed landmarks otherwise would be unnoticed. Thank you Lucía!
