The Colosseum of El Jem is quite simply the 3rd largest amphitheater in the Roman world after those of Rome and Capua, and perhaps the best preserved. Carthage, located in what is now Tunisia, was once a thriving ancient city founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC. It became a major power in the Mediterranean, recognized for its vast commercial networks and its formidable navy. Carthage's rich history includes its legendary rivalry with Rome, which reached its peak during the Punic Wars.
