Itinerary
Adventure with us on this magical Northern Lights hunt, departing at 9pm this evening cruise from Tromsø in the darkness of Polar Night. This guided cruise aboard the large, comfortable sightseeing catamaran MS Rygerdronningen departs from Tromsø, some 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. During the winter, the sun sets in Tromsø around the 27 November and normally doesn’t rise until 15 January, which creates an amazing dark condition for seeing this once in a lifetime scene. You can look out for the Aurora through the panoramic windows of our warm, cozy cabin and then head out into the crisp Arctic air for a look from our spacious decks for an even clearer view. The Auroras are unforgettable light shows caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. They are best seen near the Earth’s North and South Poles. They can be many colors, although green is the most common.
Even with all the science we have today, the Northern Lights still carry an aura of mystery and enchantment. For centuries, people have looked to the sky and created stories to explain these dancing colours. The ancient Vikings, for example, believed the shimmering waves were reflections from the shining shields and armour of the Valkyrie — fierce female warriors guiding fallen heroes to Valhalla. It’s a reminder that the Aurora has always inspired wonder, magic, and imagination. Northern Lights Guarantee Our experienced crew will do everything possible to guide you into the best conditions for witnessing the Aurora Borealis. However, as the Northern Lights are a natural and unpredictable phenomenon, sightings can never be guaranteed. If the lights do not appear during your tour, we offer a complimentary ticket for the next available Northern Lights safari on our boat. This ticket can be used once and allows you another chance to chase the magic of the Arctic sky.
Your Vessel: MS Rygerdronningen The MS Rygerdronningen is an ideal vessel for Northern Lights hunting. Spacious and comfortable, it offers generous outdoor viewing decks as well as warm, cosy indoor lounges — perfect for enjoying the journey no matter the weather. Onboard, you’ll also find a kiosk where you can purchase light meals, snacks, and a selection of hot and cold drinks to keep you comfortable throughout the evening. Embark with us for a memorable night at sea, where nature, history, and a touch of Scandinavian legend come together beneath the Arctic sky.

We went on this boat, the trip was great, not only because the aurora was spectacular, the guides explained perfectly everything about the formation of the auroras, the legends they originate and also aspects of the stars that could be seen.
We had already left with the least hope... The navigation was short... The boat very comfortable and extremely pleasant... But once we found the right place.... The magic has begun... Above our heads and everywhere around us, we were captured and enveloped in the magic of THE DARKNESS... Concentrated but intense experience... You need just a lucky time... (MOST CXLO for Italian)
Comfortable ship, friendly crew…however, luck-of-the-roll weather determines whether it’s a good experience or not. Unfortunately, we rolled ‘snake eyes’ and had zero visibility to see the Northern Lights so it was a rather expensive & boring late night excursion.
Transportation by boat is really comfortable. Sightings of the Northern Lights from the boat were very limited as compared to viewings on bus tours (compared photo's with people who took a bus tour on the same night as I did the boat tour; location also on the south of Tromso).
Very Nice tour , really good vessel to hit waves in necessary case , very confortable . Crew well trained . The time with the whales is short in my opinion but it is due to special regulation to protect them , soo i’m fully agree with it . No food or any thing to eat included in a 6-8 h tours …. bring your own .
They cancelled last minute without any prior notice making excuse of bad weather. However other companies were taking groups
We booked the cruise to 'see the lights'. Our previous two trips (with other tour operators) had been cancelled due to the 0% chance of seeing the lights due to the poor weather conditions. We checked in with the Catamaran company to see if the cruise would be cancelled.. they said no. Assuming the company obviously know more than we do, we went along. However, I feel the whole evening was just stringing us along to see the lights... that we were never going to see. The cruise literally did a lap of Tromso and whilst the crew were very good (lots of explaining about the lights, drink refreshments served with a smile and lovely attitude) I feel we should have been offered the opportunity for a refund knowing the weather was so poor. We were offered a free return trip... which due to us leaving the following day was not possible.
Being out on the boat was fun. The staff couldn't be more accommodating and highly knowledgeable. The weather did not provide a glimpse of the lights but we continue to have hopes for our next adventure.
The cruise was very nice. Unfortunately we were not able to see the Northern Lights. However the company offers the chance to book the cruise again until you see the Lights.
No lights but no complaints about the experience. Ample space on board for outdoor and indoor seating.
