Just spent an amazing day walking between Iztaçcihuatl and Popocatepetl with our guide for the trip Bernado who picked us up and took us to the start point then throughout the walk kept us informed about the history of the area while always checking everyone was ok as it takes some acclimmatising at that height when your not used to it. Stopped at the waterfall where we enjoyed the prepacked lunch that they had made for us, before heading back and enjoying more food at a local taco place which was also included in the price. Special shoutout to Jason and Elaine for the stories and banter.
Everything went perfectly. You can book the tour at short notice; we received immediate assistance via WhatsApp chat for any questions. The tour also took place even though only two people were registered, and the guide Carlos managed everything very charmingly. Carlos is very funny and caters to the needs of all tour participants :) The route itself is not difficult, but for us, it was quite strenuous because we were not used to over 3500 meters of elevation gain. In the end, there were delicious quesadillas at a local snack bar.
Really great experience with beautiful views! Carlos was a great guide. Be mindful of the high altitude!
Beto was a good guide and gave us route choices and encouragement. We started off in nice weather but unfortunately had a few hailstorms. Track is good but pretty challenging uphills in the beginning.
This experience was excellent from beginning to end! Travesias was ready for us at the appointed time and we headed into the National Park. Carlos was a phenomenal guide and ensured everybody in the group was good with the decisions we made along the way. He adjusted for some of our hikers and kept the group spirited. The park itself and trails are excellently maintained and the views were beyond my expectation. The park is a nice combination of wooded, grassy, and open terrain. The trail was good for average hiking fitness as the inclines are gradual and was a good introduction to a hiking at elevation. With the clear, beautiful weather I'm not sure it could have gone any better. Can't speak highly enough of it! The daypack bag provided was excellent- very good combination of fast sugar snacks and bigger food. Plenty water and an energy drink. Lacked nothing. Based on this experience, I really want to return to the park with this outfit and do their Refuge of 100 hike! (Photos are not even the best of the day, I will leave those moments for people joining to discover)
The hike was enjoyable and worth it, even with clouds and limited visibility! I do wish our guide, Betoh, had been a bit more engaging. I’ve done a lot of tours around the world, and guides are always talkative, educational, and interact more with the group. Unfortunatelly there was no excitement from our guide in the morning ,much of the long drive was spent in silence, with little information shared about the areas we passed through or the volcanoes once we arrived. It often felt like the group had to initiate conversation and actively ask questions to get information or learn something interesting.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience—we truly appreciate it. We’re really glad to hear that you enjoyed the hike, even with the clouds. The mountains have a special kind of magic, even when they don’t fully reveal themselves. Regarding your comments about the guide, we genuinely appreciate your honesty. This is actually something we care deeply about—our experiences are usually known for having guides who are engaging, friendly, and proactive in sharing information about the surroundings, the volcanoes, and the journey itself, while creating a dynamic and connected group atmosphere from the very beginning. Our goal is for it to feel like much more than just a hike—it should be a full experience from the moment the day starts. That’s why what you described is not the standard we aim to deliver. We’re already addressing this with Betoh and reinforcing it across our entire team to ensure the energy, interaction, and overall experience are consistently there. Thank you for helping us improve. We’d love the opportunity to have you join us again and experience the trip the way we truly intend it to be.
Fun day and worth getting up early, got to hike to just over 13,000ft. Would recommend, 2 hr drive each way was worth it . Hike itself was about 4 hours.
Great Trek. I went mid week and there were only two of us on the trek and there was hardly anyone else at the national park. Sergio our guide was very good; he made sure we were good with the pace and elevation. We did the 12 km Manantiales trail which was fairly easy with an overall 300m elevation gain. The trails are well marked and it is walking along volcanic sand paths for the most part. We were also very lucky with the wildlife - we saw one of the volcano rabbits which have small round ears. We trekked for about 4 hours with a lunch stop of friut and sandwich which is provided. We also stopped for lunch at a roadside stall after the trek also provided. Be prepared for a slow ride back in traffic (there is no avoiding it) They will send you a list of recommended clothing to bring - but it largely depends on the weather. I checked the forecast before I booked and didn't need the extra layers - but it will be colder up in the mountains and always be prepared for rain. I would absolutley recommend the trip - you can get the bus to Amecameca but you then need to get a taxi to the park and it would probably take an hour longer and you get the best views of Popocatepetl in the early morning before it clouds over.
Fantastic views, beautiful hike! A must do for a hiking enthusiast. Sudden elevation gain makes it a bit difficult but the trail is mostly gentle. Our guide Betto was very good. He paced it for the slowest of the group. The hike included packed light lunch. After hike lunch at the roadside stall was very good. The van they use has no suspension so if you are in the last two rows, you are going to feel every bump on the road. If you are vegetarian, remind them the day before again to pack vegetarian lunch.
Great day trip from mexico city The starting point of the trek is actually the route that Hermon Cortes took upon entry to mexico city ,our guide was very knowledgeable on everything about Mexico Great practice if your learning spanish
