Amazing historical journey of an animation and entertainment institution A hidden gem in San Francisco
I am a lifelong Disney fan and was so pleased to learn a lot of new things about Walt Disney. To start with, the museum is in the Presidio, a historic prior military installation which is very picturesque. The museum staff are all delightful and easy to identify as they wear bright red sweaters/shirts. I learned that Walt’s notable first cartoon character was a rabbit. Sounded like he lost this character through some underhanded business dealings. Also learned that he created a number of short films featuring a little girl inserted into animation. Four little girls were used for this series of shorts. Very interesting to watch. Then we get to Mickey and the beloved early Disney films. Lots of details about how innovative Walt’s staff were regarding creating animation films and Walt picked talented staff and let them create and invent. Nice to see how many women had integral roles. I never realized how many cartoon shorts were produced. Then got to see a very fun documentary about the opening day of Disneyland. Barely controlled chaos, so different from the Disney precision I’ve always experienced at Disney world. Learned Walt died of complications of lung cancer surgery before Disney World in Orlando opened. Lots of great artifacts and anecdotes, well worth a visit. Cafe had only drinks and snacks, but there was a nice variety of food trucks right outside. Gift shop was a bit underwhelming, mostly books and t-shirts/sweatshirts. If you have any interest in Disney this is well worth a couple hours of your day!
We spent around 3 hours including about 30 mins in the very reasonably priced cafe. Having visited the Disney world in Florida it was interesting to hear and see the family story and history behind the family. Well worth a visit.
Public Parking must be paid with a credit card before entering the museum. Allow about 3 hours if you like to read through a museum. Lots of family memorabilia.. some one of a kind.

Excellent displays of Walt Disney from early life to his passing. As you would expect from anything Disney, the displays were interactive., interesting and well-paced.
Parking difficulties on weekends. Give museum tour minimum 2-3 hours to see & read everything. A great history of Walt Disney.
Interesting and nicely laid out exhibit about the life of Walt Disney. Interactive elements and all in a gorgeous setting at the presidio. Allow 1.5-2hours
Got my tickets from Viator immediately, and was easy to scan in! We got the 4:20pm time slot because it was the only one we could make work. 1 hour was not enough time! Plan for 2 hours minimum, 3 if y I u really like to read and listen to things! This museum had so much more than I thought it would.
As someone who grew up watching Disney movies, this was one of the most interesting museums I’ve ever visited. It has a remarkable collection of items—original drawings, scripts, and personal belongings—and the space is much larger than it looks from the outside. What truly makes it special is how it narrates the technical evolution of animation, from the earliest sketches of Mickey to the vision of Disneyland. It’s an immersive and moving experience that shows the more human side of Walt. It’s definitely worth spending an entire afternoon there.
