Definitely worth doing when in Bucharest

We had such an interesting tour today lead by an extremely knowledgeable Andrea. We throughly enjoyed it and she made the tour engaging and interesting and we learnt so much about the struggles the Romanian people faced during the communist years.

A Must Do tour!

This was a fantastic tour of the post WWII life and history in Bucharest. Andreea was passionate and knowledgeable and so clearly wanted to share her knowledge and personal experience about the communist Ceaucescu regime’s impact on Romania. We felt it all come to life and saw the real impact on buildings and people’s lifestyles in Romania. Highly recommend this tour and this guide!

A very enjoyable and informative tour

This was a very enjoyable and informative walking tour. Our guide Mihai was very knowledgeable, and explained the history of the communist period and how it related to the various buildings and streets we saw. He explained the context of the construction of the Palace of the Parliament, in that Ceausescu spent huge sums on a disproportionately large and grand building at a time when the majority of Romanian people lived very basic lives with many everyday items rationed. This context is not given on the tour of the Parliament itself. He was happy to answer questions, not just regarding the Communist period, but also regarding contemporary Romanian politics. Seeing the balcony from which Ceausescu made his final speech in December 1989 was a particular highlight, having seen this on TV news at the time. There was a short stop at a cafe during the 3 hours, offering a chance to buy a drink or a snack and to use the toilet facilities. This tour was excellent value and definitely recommended.

The tour provided so much...

The tour provided so much insight into Bucharest and Romania; insight ranging from the physical layout of the city to past and current political ideas and realities. Our guide, Sylvia, explained how communism shaped present day Bucharest, showing us important landmarks and features. Sylvia’s love for her country and passion for the subject matter infused the tour with energy. For someone not well versed in Romanian history, the tour provides an exciting entry point into a unique piece of Romania’s past.

Excellent experience!!

This was a surprisingly (to me) enjoyable and (not surprisingly) educational afternoon. Our guide Elena was extraordinary! She is a consummate story teller with personal life experience that she imparts to the potentially dry information she presented. Our family includes two young boys (11 and 13) who are tough to engage but she held them captive! I want to just give as many stars as possible.

Ceausescuism close up and personal

My interest in Romania's political history was the main reason for visiting Bucharest, so I had already done my preparatory reading and YT-video watching. This guided tour added the understanding and the personal lived experiences on top of the facts. You really get impression of how the Romanians lived under Ceausescu's version of Communism by going to concrete locations where events happened or that represent characteristics of that political/economis/social system. The guide (political scientist Andrea) also successfully mixed high level ideological parts of the story & route with low level concrete aspects of communist life, and tragic elements with the more entertaining. In addition you also get insight into post-revolution Romania. All in all a very recommendable activity for visitors to Bucharest.

Fantastic, Eye-Opening Tour

We did "The Real Tour of Communism" while visiting Bucharest, and it was easily one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide, Tudor, was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about the history. He didn't just rattle off dates but gave us real context that made the history come alive. The pace of the walking tour was perfect. We covered a lot of ground without feeling rushed. There was a great stop for coffee along the way, which was a lovely touch and gave us a chance to process everything we were seeing. I highly recommend this tour if you want a deeply informative, interesting, and well-structured look into Bucharest’s communist past.

This a definite “must...

This a definite “must do”. The story of communism is very fresh here in Bucharest, and the effects of that period are still visible today. Super informative. John, our guide did a great job answering our questions as we walked along the tour.
