We had an absolutely incredible tour with Jorge, one of the few current archaeologists with direct experience excavating Teotihuacán. His depth of knowledge was astounding—no matter what question we asked about dating artifacts or the excavation methods, he had a thoughtful, detailed answer. He was funny, engaging, and really made the history come alive. We know how rare it is to have the actual archaeologist who dug the site as a guide—Jorge is truly a gem. This tour was an absolute highlight, and I would recommend it to everyone—don’t hesitate to book if you get the chance to!
We were very frustrated at what we felt to be a bait & switch. We paid a higher price for this tour specifically so that we could be guided by an archaeologist who had worked at the site. We communicated with Jorge prior to the date of the tour, and he helped us secure transportation and assured us he would be our guide. When we arrived on site, he met the car and introduced us to Daniel, who he said would be great, was a “historian”, and that Jorge was saving us from being lost in a big group. Well, we never saw Jorge on site guiding another group. Daniel was a fine guide, but certainly not an archaeologist, and we could have gotten the tour he gave for half the price we paid. We also discovered that the driver Jorge arranged for us was his father, and the drive back into town took 2x as long as it should have (we were checking Waze and suggesting alternatives that he didn't take). All in all we felt cheated and felt we spent double what we should have for an average tour.
A magical visit that allowed us to discover a civilization, or rather several, with a guide who made us experience his passion. Jorge is an extremely competent archaeologist and ethnologist who brings the stones to life and makes them speak. Thank you!
Jorge was the best tour guide! He had so much knowledge about the site because he has worked on excavations and we could have spent days talking about all that he knows. I would highly recommend going with him!
Thanks
Jorge was incredible! I was blown away being able to get a personal tour from an archeologist who actually worked and did excavations and research on the site itself. His knowledge of the history and culture was amazing and he was willing to go on any tangent based on what I asked about and was interested in. He had cool visual aids in a binder which helped with some of his explanations, and overall he really brought Teotihuacan to life for me. It was the perfect experience for ancient history nerds like myself!
I was looking for an in-depth walkthrough of the Teotihuacan site with a truly knowledgeable guide. My experience with other historical and archeological sites is that guides will give you either a Wikipedia-ish summary – something you can read in 15 minutes on your own – or entertaining stories that aren’t well grounded in research or irrelevant to the site. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case here. Jorge, our guide, pleasantly exceeded our expectations. He was extremely knowledgeable, easy to understand (his English is great, my Spanish is… not so much). He went into considerable depth about the site, Mesoamerican history, the artifacts, the people, and the culture. What truly set him apart was his ability to share his own research experience in a way that was both relatable and informative. For anyone concerned that this tour might be *too* in-depth, members of my family who were completely unfamiliar with the subject still found it engaging and enjoyable. None of us are experts, and I appreciated how patiently and clearly Jorge answered our questions. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants a deeper, researcher-by-your-side perspective while visiting this awe-inspiring site.
Well worth getting a guide to explain things you would never know without the expert to answer questions as well as the entire history of it all.
Daniel was an excellent guide -- thank you for a great experience.
I am a bit of a ancient history buff, and this was the single best tour experience I have ever had. Our tour guide was Jorge Archer. Jorge's knowledge of the subject matter and site is unparalleled. He (and his wife) actually worked excavating the site and has intimate knowledge of the complex and the individual buildings. There is no question he cannot answer. Jorge was patient with our questions and really took the time to help us understand the culture and history. I really cant stress how good this tour was... It made my trip. Things to know: LOTS OF WALKING, (we hit 20K steps). This is not appropriate for anyone with mobility issues. Uneven ground, ungroomed surfaces and lots of up and down. That being said, it is totally doable for anyone in reasonable health. Wear good shoes. WEAR SUNSCREEN & BRING A HAT, they don't call it the pyramid of the sun for no reason. BRING WATER, not a lot of facilities on site. Don't miss the opportunity to hire Jorge... he is simply the best possible guide.
What a gift to have Dr. Jorge as our guide! He’s researched so many different aspects of the culture and history here, and was able to answer in great detail every random question or thought that we had. He even tailored the tour to our backgrounds (mine in microbiological and my friend’s in astrological) and clearly has a great deal of knowledge in many areas of life in general. Absolutely recommend!
