Itinerary
Szentendre is a historic town with cobblestone streets, Baroque architecture, and a lively art scene. Settled by various peoples over the centuries, it became an important center for Serbian refugees in the 17th century, who left behind a distinctive Orthodox heritage. Today, its museums, galleries, and Danube River promenade make it a favorite destination for visitors interested in culture and history.
Visegrád Castle in Hungary is a history buff's/nature lover's dream. Combining an impressive 13th-century citadel with stunning Danube views, this stop is a great opportunity to explore Hungary's royal past and take amazing photos of the Danube Bend. You can even see a wax figure exhibit of the famous 1335 meeting of three kings. (Please note that between January 12 - February 28, the castle is only open on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays.)
Towering over Esztergom, Hungary, the Esztergom Basilica is a sight to behold. As the largest church in the country, it boasts a grand neoclassical design, a massive dome visible for kilometers, and a rich history. Built on the site of earlier churches dating back to King Stephen I, it's the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary and offers stunning views and a deep connection to Hungarian history. Esztergom Castle, next to the basilica, was the royal residence and the political and religious center of Hungary from the reign of Saint Stephen until the mid-13th century.
From Esztergom, we will briefly cross into Slovakia for postcard-perfect views of the basilica and the city’s old town.
For those interested, Szentendre’s Marzipan Museum showcases the artistry of this sweet craft, with life-size sculptures of Lady Diana, Michael Jackson, and many other figures from history, cartoons, and nature. Watch master confectioners at work as they shape sweets into edible art, making the visit both fun and educational - and of course tasty.
Visegrad has a hidden gem: the Pilis Biosphere Reserve, a national park within the national park. It is a picturesque region characterized by its unique vegetation, meandering creeks, cascading waterfalls, and serene lakes teeming with trout. You can enjoy the unique experience of tasting freshly prepared trout, caught straight from these lakes, or game from the surrounding forests, at a cozy forest restaurant nestled among the trees (the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but there are many other lunch options available nearby).

We booked our Danube bend day trip from Budapest with Tamas during the historical heat wave, with temperatures over 100 degrees F. Despite the heat, tamas picked us up from our hotel and gave us a wonderful day trip, with a slower pace. He was very patient with my 3 yr old toddler (and even bought a new car seat to accommodate her age and size) and grandparents we were traveling with. At the end of the day, my daughter was commenting how nice and kind he was. He provided us with great local snacks and drinks all day (kept ice cold in his fridge cooler). He always made sure to start the car ac ahead of time to keep us comfortable. He explained so much Hungarian history because we were interested and toured us around the sites so we could do the highlights efficiently. We got to see so much in a day and he never made us feel rushed at all. We loved his story telling and his kindness. The price seemed steep but in the end I’m glad we felt we got our money’s worth even during the heat wave.
Thank you so much for your wonderful and thoughtful review! It was a pleasure having you all along, and I’m especially glad I could make the day comfortable for your daughter and grandparents despite the extreme heat. I’m delighted you enjoyed the history, stories, and sights, and that you felt the tour was well worth it. It was truly a pleasure spending the day with you and your family and I hope to see you all again on another adventure!
It was wonderful! The knowledge Tamas had on the history was amazing. We were so lucky to have him to ourselves. I would encourage anyone to do a tour with him. Well worth it!

Nothing short of spectacular. Must not miss this tour. Tamas is so knowledgeable and is a master at tying history to everything on the tour. What a wonderful day! Tamas was amazing, I can’t say it enough. He is a safe driver and incredibly friendly and respectful. He can tailor anything to any audience. His vehicle was clean and the snacks and drinks provided hit the spot! Thanks Tamas. Looking forward to another tour in the future!

Tamas, our guide was very kind he brought snacks and beverages we never got hungry. He even allowed us to take photos in a sunflower field which is not part of the tour😅The tour went smoothly and we covered every key point in the tour. Tamas was like my history teacher, important eras in Europe history from Atilla Hun to the Romans, kings and queens, betrayals, buried treasures, Dracula and whatnot were discussed Tamas was talking the whole day!😅 This is a “must do” when in Budapest, seeing the scenic Danube and walking thru it’s beautiful and historic streets and old town squares.
Thank you so much for your amazing review! I'm really happy you enjoyed the tour, the history, and of course the extra sunflower field stop. 🙂 It was a pleasure spending the day with you, and I'm glad the snacks, drinks, and stories kept everyone going. Thanks again for joining me, and I hope to welcome you back to Hungary someday!
Such a wonderful experience traveling the Danube Bend with Tamás!! He was so hospitable, with lots of beverages and snacks for the road, and the ride was super comfortable. More importantly, Tamás was a WEALTH of knowledge on Hungarian history and we had a great time seeing it come alive in the different locations we went to along the Bend.
