My MEMORABLE solo trip to Kumarakom ❤️

An absolutely pleasurable trip with fantastic reception, warmth and care, which ended in sumptuous dinner prepared by a very friendly chef. What needs to improve is better choice of routes itself, possibly covering more eclectic mix of narrow to broad landscapes, flora fauna and more vibrancy. The boatman was the quieter kind as opposed to my enthusiasm and curiosity for trivia and details . That gap was filled by another member who hopped into the boat, and also obliged with my wish for phototaking. My heartfelt thank you to the Canoe Kerala team for making my trip memorable and happy. Lastly, whoever sait the July if offseason for visiting Keral is completely wrong, I had the best time cruising places by boat

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review. It truly means a lot to know that your journey with us was filled with warmth, care, and memorable moments from the very beginning. We are delighted that you enjoyed the hospitality, the sunset of genuine conversations, and the dinner lovingly prepared by our chef. We will certainly pass on your kind words to the entire team, who will be encouraged to know they helped make your visit special. We also sincerely appreciate your constructive feedback. We are always looking for ways to make our experiences richer, and your suggestion about including a more eclectic mix of waterways and landscapes is a valuable one. Kumarakom has countless hidden canals, open lakes, bird habitats, and village waterways, and we continuously refine our routes to offer guests a deeper and more varied experience of the backwaters. Thank you as well for sharing your thoughts about the guiding experience. Every guest engages with the backwaters differently, and we understand the joy of travelling with someone who shares your curiosity and enthusiasm. We are glad another member of our team could step in, answer your questions, and help capture those memorable photographs. Your feedback helps us continue training our team to better understand and adapt to the interests of every traveller. And we couldn't agree more about July. The monsoon reveals a side of Kerala that many travellers overlook. The rain-washed landscapes, lush greenery, quieter waterways, and gentle rhythm of life create an experience that is deeply immersive and uniquely beautiful. We are so happy that you embraced this season and discovered its magic for yourself. Thank you once again for choosing Canoe Kerala. It was a privilege to host you, and we hope to welcome you back someday for another journey through the backwaters—perhaps with a few more hidden canals, stories, and surprises waiting to be discovered. Warm Regards, Team Canoe Kerala

Great cruise

What a great afternoon we have had with Sreejith and Bari on our sunset cruise. Picked up and dropped back at hotel in a tuc tuc as well A nice cruise up the river in a lovely boat with arm chair seats . We called in at a proper village where sreejith lives. No shops or people trying to sell you anything. Called at his house saw his parents who told us what they farmed then had the best mango ever. Back on the boat and on the lake for the sunset. Now it was food time back at where we boarded the boat. What a banquet to much food for two. Thank you for a great evening

Operator response

Dear dph1966, Thank you so much for your wonderful review and for sharing your experience with us. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your afternoon and sunset cruise with Sreejith and Bari. Creating experiences that go beyond sightseeing and offer a genuine glimpse into local life is something we are deeply passionate about, so it is especially rewarding to know that these moments resonated with you. We are glad you appreciated the comfortable boat ride and the seamless pick-up and drop-off arrangements. However, what makes us happiest is knowing that your visit to the village became a memorable part of your journey. Meeting local families, learning about their way of life, and experiencing the warmth of traditional village hospitality are moments that many of our guests cherish long after their visit. It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed visiting Sreejith's family home, meeting his parents, learning about their farming practices, and, of course, tasting the fresh mangoes. Simple experiences like these often become the most meaningful memories because they offer an authentic connection to the people and culture of Kerala. We are also delighted that the sunset on the lake lived up to expectations. There is something truly special about watching the day come to an end over the peaceful waters, and we are pleased that you were able to experience that magic. Finally, we are thrilled that you enjoyed the dinner. Sharing traditional food is an important part of our hospitality, and it is always a pleasure to hear that guests appreciated both the quality and abundance of the meal. Thank you once again for your kind words and for choosing to spend your evening with us. We hope the memories of the village, the sunset, and the warm hospitality stay with you for a long time, and we would be delighted to welcome you back whenever your travels bring you to Kerala again. Warm regards, Team Canoe Kerala

Dear Anne, Thank you so much for your lovely review and for sharing your experience with us! We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time with Jes. The trip was amazing. Our two guides knew so much about the area and the wildlife. The scenery was incredibly beautiful. Would recommend 100%.

A great personable experience!

We highly recommend this tour, it’s a small operation that is very personable and well run. The boats are in good condition and because of their size it allows you to see the inner canals which are far more interesting than riding on a large houseboat that can only float on the lake. The guides were super friendly and fun, and to top it off we were served a large delicious meal at the end. It was a very enjoyable afternoon experience.

Operator response

Dear Craig, Thank you so much for this thoughtful and encouraging review—it truly means a lot to us. We’re especially happy that you appreciated the small, personal nature of the experience. Keeping things intimate allows us to do what we love most—take you beyond the wider lake and into the quieter inner canals, where Kumarakom reveals its true character through village life, bird calls, and everyday moments on the water. It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the company of our team as well. We believe these journeys are as much about conversations and shared laughter as they are about the landscape itself, so your kind words about our guides really mean a lot to them. And of course, we’re glad the meal was a highlight! Ending the experience with freshly prepared local dishes is our way of bringing together everything the backwaters offer—flavour, tradition, and a sense of home. Thank you once again for your wholehearted recommendation. We hope to welcome you back someday for another slow, memorable afternoon in the backwaters. Warm Regards, Team Canoe Kerala

Incredible experience

The best way to spend four hours in Kumarakom!! The time on the backwaters was serene, peaceful and extremely comfortable. The boat was the best of any we saw and the people were incredibly polite and well informed about the local area including the bird life, flora and local culture. Whilst the boat ride was fantastic, the dinner was another level!! The team prepared an extraordinary meal with seven or eight different dishes freshly prepared local dishes, each one different and flavoursome. The team was on hand to discuss the food. And if this wasn't enough, they surprised us with a birthday cake for my son. I recommend this experience without any reservation!

Operator response

Dear Shiv, Thank you so much for this incredibly generous review—it truly means a lot to all of us at Canoe Kerala. We’re so happy to hear that your time on the backwaters felt serene and comfortable, just as we hope every journey through Kumarakom should be. Our team takes great pride in not just navigating the waters, but sharing the stories of the land—its birds, flora, and everyday life—so it’s wonderful to know that came through in your experience. And your kind words about the meal have made our kitchen team especially happy! We had always took efforts towards preparing a spread of local dishes made from freshly sourced ingredients, and being able to share the stories behind each one is something we deeply enjoy, so knowing it stood out for you makes it even more special. Celebrating your son’s birthday with you was truly our pleasure. Moments like these are what make what we do so meaningful, and we’re glad we could add a little surprise to your evening. Thank you once again for your wholehearted recommendation—we hope to welcome you and your family back to Kumarakom for many more such slow, beautiful moments on the water. Warm Regards, Team Canoe Kerala

Fantastic sunset cruise. Will remember it for a long time.

My wife and I discovered Canoe Kerala quite by chance. We were visiting Kumarakom and stayed at the Taj where we had some earlier memories of. During a search on Google my wife came across the Sunset Cruise of Canoe Kerala. We booked it and in summary were absolutely delighted we had. The shikara we were taken in to see the backwaters of Kumarakom was absolutely delightful. A comfortable motorised shikara we felt we were floating right on the water. It was a private shikara ride for 2 of us. The guide Apu and his assistant Abby were fantastic. Speaking excellent English they took us around the backwaters including stopping off at a village where we met a woman making coir and rope from coconut fibre. We also met a man drawing toddy from a coconut tree. All in all a fascinating experience the highlight of which was watching the sunset over Lake Vembanad. The guide was knowledgeable and interesting. This trip is highly recommended to any visitors to Kumarakom. The price of the shikara ride included a fantastic Kerala dinner at the homestead of a young man called Jesvanth who runs a food chain called Wonder Werk Kitchen. Will do a separate review if the dinner which was outstanding.

Operator response

Dear Navneet, Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a beautifully detailed account of your experience with us. It truly means a lot. We love hearing that your journey with Canoe Kerala began by chance and turned into something so memorable. Kumarakom has a quiet way of revealing itself, and we’re glad the sunset cruise gave you that unhurried, intimate glimpse of the backwaters. It’s wonderful to know that you enjoyed the comfort of the shikara and the feeling of simply floating through the waterways. Achu and his team of local guides will be especially happy to hear your kind words—they take great pride in not just guiding, but creating meaningful connections with the place, its people, and its stories. Those little village moments you mentioned—the coir making, the toddy tapping—are exactly what we hope our guests carry back with them. They are small windows into a way of life that has remained deeply rooted in tradition and community. And of course, the sunset over Lake Vembanad… it never fails to leave a lasting impression. We’re so glad you got to experience it in all its quiet beauty. It’s also heartening to know you enjoyed the dinner experience with Jesvanth at Wonderwerk Kitchen. We believe that food is an extension of the journey, and it’s lovely that your day on the water flowed seamlessly into a memorable meal. Thank you once again for your recommendation. We hope to welcome you both back someday—perhaps for a sunrise cruise next time, when the backwaters wake up in an entirely different mood. Warm Regards, Team Canoe Kerala

Wonderful canoeing experience with Canoe Kerala

Took the sunset canoe ride with Canoe Kerala and it was a wonderful experience. The team was warm and welcoming, and the ride gave us a beautiful glimpse into village life. We plucked fresh coconut from the tree and drank it, tasted raw tamarind, walked alongside paddy fields, spotted many birds, watched fishermen at work, and saw locals going about their daily routines—even kids dancing and playing. Our boat guides, Achu and little Sanu, were absolutely awesome—friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole ride very engaging. The experience ended with a serene sunset before we were dropped back at the hotel. Truly memorable. Side note: if you do an early morning kayak for sunrise and a sunset canoe ride like this, you really don’t need to book a houseboat. These two together offer a much more intimate and authentic backwater experience.

Operator response

Dear Mayank, Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed and heartfelt review. We’re thrilled to know that your sunset canoe ride with Canoe Kerala left such a memorable impression. Experiencing the backwaters at a gentle pace—plucking fresh coconuts, tasting raw tamarind, walking by paddy fields, spotting birds, watching fishermen at work, and observing village life—is exactly the kind of authentic, intimate connection with Kerala that we hope every guest takes away. We love that you noticed the little moments, from children playing to locals going about their routines, as these are the heartbeats of everyday life here. Achu and Sanu will be especially touched by your kind words. Their friendliness, knowledge, and enthusiasm are what make each ride engaging, insightful, and fun, and it’s wonderful to know that you felt that energy throughout the experience. Ending the ride with a serene sunset is always a quiet joy, and we’re glad it was the perfect close to your adventure. Your note about combining the early morning kayak and sunset canoe as a complete backwater experience really captures the philosophy we follow—slow, meaningful, and personal. It’s deeply rewarding to hear that this approach resonated with you and offered a richer, more authentic alternative to the usual houseboat experience. Thank you again for choosing Canoe Kerala. We hope the memories of this peaceful, immersive backwater journey stay with you for a long time, and we would be delighted to welcome you back for more paddles and sunsets in the future. Warm Regards, Team Canoe Kerala
