Sunset and Night Photography in Arches National Park

Description
We will visit at least four locations for photography in iconic Arches National Park for the afternoon golden hour and sunset. I have traveled extensively in search of amazing photographic locations, and it is hard to beat Arches National Park for the wide variety of photographic locations, and it is an official international Dark Skies park. During the busy season, I will lead the tour to locations that are less well known but still spectacular. I will show you great locations, and make suggestions on composition and subject matter. I can even help you with your camera settings if you are a beginner. After sunset. we will take a brief break for a picnic and go over camera settings for night photography while we wait for the Milky Way to emerge. (Note: in April & May, the Milky Way does not appear until after midnight, so we will return to Moab after sunset, and head back out late at night. A wee hours tour is available as a standalone tour during this time).

We did two sessions with Colin—a morning session at Canyonlands and an evening/nighttime shoot at Arches. Colin was great— accommodated my skills, helped me find compositions, gave me a great introduction to astrophotography. He’s personable and knowledgeable. Recommend him highly.
I booked Rocklight Photo Tours for a Sunset photography tour and again, for a night hike and photography at the Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. My experience was awesome. The sunset photography tour was led by Geremy and he was funny, intelligent and helpful. He has a unique capability of giving you feedback without coming across as condescending. A very sweet chap and whether you learn photography or not, you will enjoy his company. MY second experience was with Colin Young. I had two tours with him. One was a normal night sky photography tour and another was the Delicate Arch Tour. He led me up to the Delicate Arch in the dead of the night. Boy, was I glad I went with him! If I had gone solo, I'd still be trapped somewhere up there on the mountain! Once we reached our photography point, he gave helped me get the best possible shot of the Milky Way and the Delicate Arch. Later, he gave me some advice for more photography around Arches National Park as I wanted to continue shooting. Very helpful and highly recommended.
We had an absolutely amazing experience on this sunset and nigh photography tour. We actually did two tours with this operator: this one and the Night Photography Tour. For both tours, our guides, Colin and Geremy, were everything you could hope for: informative, fun, and incredibly helpful. Their deep knowledge of night photography — especially the subtleties and tricks of astrophotography — really helped us take our skills to the next level. What really stood out was their patience and ability to teach. No question was too basic, and they created a relaxed, supportive environment throughout. Beyond photography, both guides had an impressive understanding of the history, geology, and unique features of Arches National Park, which added so much depth to the experience. If you’re interested in learning more about night photography in one of the most stunning settings imaginable, I can’t recommend this tour enough!
Colin was as amazing as were the views. He was extremely knowledgeable about Arches and even more knowledgeable about how to compose a great picture. To top this off, Colin was a truly fine human being. I found the tour great fun and very rewarding for his teachings and for some amazing pictures of nature’s wonders.
Very knowledgeable, Colin and Geremy took us to all the great spots for photos! Will definitely go back out there again!
Taking night sky photos of Milkyway galaxy was on top of my bucket list, just did not know how to get it done. Collin helped me to get clear unbelievable photographs with my iPhone 15 Pro.
Colin was extremely knowledgeable about Arches National Park and put us in excellent locations for photo opportunities. He stayed out until 3 in the morning waiting for the clouds to clear so we could get milky way shots. I especially appreciated that he picked us up at our hotel in Moab, toured us through the park and returned us to our hotel at the end of the tour.
Colin is an amazing teacher! Our experience with him was phenomenal. He is organized, well versed in photography, and a talented artist. He provided a camera settings guide which was very helpful for our astrophotography tour which allowed us to preset the camera ahead of time before going out in the dark! Colin has a great eye for composition and is able to guide beginners as well as advanced photographers. Best of all, he is friendly and engaging. I highly recommend his tour or class!
Colin was not only an excellent teacher, knowledgeable of the best locations in Arches for both sunset and night photography, but an excellent communicator from my initial contact to set up the tour all the way through our return to the hotel. We both learned a great deal and took some very nice images. Prior to our departure, he provided guidance as to what equipment would be best to bring. The one thing that I wish he had mentioned (particularly as we already owned them) was a headlamp with a red light. We did bring red flashlights, but it would have been nice at times to be able to operate hands free (only an issue for a night photo shoot). We have done a number of photo tours (both single- and multi-day), both domestically and overseas, and this was one of the best. Thank you for a very memorable experience.
The national parks in Utah are a sight to see, but stargazing in the parks is another experience altogether, and having Colin to guide us made all the difference. He knew where to go, and provided tips on framing the shot. He’ll sit back and let you do your thing or help you with camera settings (including the phone). His expertise and patience really shines when it comes to trying to capture the stars and Milky Way. In fact, he was willing to wait and wait and wait (you get my drift) in the hopes that the clouds would clear up so we could capture the Milky Way, It never cleared up completely, but we still had an incredible night time sky for a beautiful shot of Arches park at night time. Thanks for checking this off my kids’ bucket list, Colin! Tips: Bring dinner (sandwich/picnic meal - it’s a 6 hr+ event starting at ~ 5 pm). Most importantly, make sure to bring your tripod. Capturing the stars is impossible without one. Colin had a tripod to spare for the other group that was with us. I brought one but my son used mine.
